Please search here (use the magnifying glass to search SAS).  Those that got their SAS cars are relatively happy.  There are folks with big deposits that have been waiting years and years and years (seems like 7-10 years with still NO delivery date).  I venture they will never see their car or their $$$ again.  You'd be better off planting seeds for Red Wood trees in anticipation of building picnic tables.  RUN, Forest, RUN!

Here's one thread - https://www.speedsterowners.com/topic/sas-warning

The guy who runs SAS (I won't use his name) is known for taking deposits and not delivering cars. He has gone bankrupt at least once (2012?), opened up under almost the same name again and has promised the people he owes money to that they will get their cars. Some have been waiting 6? 7? (longer?) years. I think that, at the twilight of his working career, he's figured out that his job is to weasel deposits out of the unsuspecting public and he never has to build/finish another car. Oh, the power of the internet! Don't walk- run away as fast as you can!

I'm contemplating purchasing a new Specialty Auto Sports Subaru engineered replica. I'd like to hear from members/owners who have experience with both the cars and the company. Thanks

DR. ZZ....please consider the other builders who have faithfully serviced and gifted SOC with their fine craftsmanship and efforts. You will realize your nifty SUBIE powered SPEEDSTER much quicker and more predictably with SMILES and MILES

Coupe options are VERY limited. Special Edition in Bremen, IN is in the prototype phase of what promises to be an awesome coupe. Carey Hines @chines1 www.beckspeedster.com can fill you in.

Special Edition has a stellar reputation. They are one of two companies that I would buy from and are the only one of those planning to make a coupe.

I’ve owned one of their Speedsters for over 7 years and the customer service can’t be beat.

LISTEN TO TOM and MOLLEUR: clearly know and they(Special Edition) are religious about their customer service and a state of the art product ESPECIALLY if you are SUBARU inclined. IM is a great company also but NOT in the COUPE arena....so you should be SET. Call today and get on their build list so we can share in the build

ZZDOC,

I'm one of the very few members on here that actually had SAS build a car for them.  Since I'm now 72, I have had lots of chances to make both good and bad decisions in my business and personal life.  I have made more than a few mistakes along the way, but one of the worst is contracting with Steve Lawing of Specialty Auto Sports for a replica.

I took delivery of my coupe in August, 2013, and blew a head gasket driving it back to California.  Little did I know that mishap would be repeated in various ways for a long time.  In the 4 years of ownership, I have finally replaced almost everything in the car, and spent almost as much as the build price, just to get it running and keep it so.

Don't just walk away, RUN for your life.

However, SAS is not representative of the replica industry.  Special Editions has a great reputation for honesty, reliability, and customer service.  They're the company I should have gone with at the beginning.  Best of luck!

As others have said, do your research. In order to aid in your research here is a blog started by those who are in what is referred to as, "The Queue". The Queue is a place where people who have put deposits on SAS cars go to die. Read through their blog and listen to THEIR words of what being in The Queue actually means:

Oh, and 15 years is how long one guy has been waiting for a car. Contracted for a '32 in 2002 and 8 years later found out SAS wasn't building hot rods anymore. Converted his contract to a 356 and is still waiting.

Just say NO to SAS/SAW.

JPS makes a nice coupe, but I'm not comfortable with the ECU location: in the engine compartment.

Like others have said, Beck is in the beginning stages, they just finished their new coupe molds. I'm 100% sure it will be a winner.

Also, Vintage Motorcars in Stanton,CA is making a pre-A coupe, with the 2 gauge dash. This is put on a shortened Bug chassis and soon to be custom frame(I think).  Greg Leach at Vintage does a really great fit, finish, and attention to detail on Spyders(I'm on my second car from him). I see no reason why a coupe wouldn't be the same. Seduction Motorsprts gets Spyder and coupe bodies from Vintage Motorsports, and builds them to completion.
