I was looking for a dedicated track car when I came across this car about an hour and a half from me. Needs a little TLC but is/was in good enough shape to own so I impulse bought it on what I felt was a low ball offer

I was going to fix it up and flip it, but I really enjoy cruising around in it. I have a 914 which I ended up stripping to bare shell and have slowly been restoring, but bought it to drive and never got to. The speedster oddly enough has sort of fit the bill as a cruiser to the point that I've decided to keep it. Just ordered a top, thinking about side curtains. Tuned the motor, replacing a couple of rusting bits, flushed the brakes, and generally working to make a real nice driver. These don't go fast or stop well, but for traffic light to light, couldn't be a much cooler little inexpensive ride so......

Hoping there are some more speedsters in the coastal areas of NC, if so love to hear from you. Saw the TOTD trip, would go but that's 7 hours from me.......as someone else said, a bit to much for a speedster drive.

A couple of pics for your enjoyment

Yeah probably Renn. Not a huge Pelican guy, buy parts often and check the FS threads from time to time, but been on Renn a good while and its home to me.

Please I was mad and sick a long time ago...........try supporting a 911 (993) and taking it to the track for regular.......exercise! Then there is the 914 that went to bare bones.....I have more in the tub than people sell complete cars for! But thank you for the welcome, I intend on enjoying the board and the car if both are anything like the Rennlist guys

What do you mean these cars don't go fast or stop well?

You have a lot to learn, grasshopper.

Well let me re-qualify. Mine with a 1500 vw motor and stock brakes from the mid 80's, doesn't do anything compared to the 993............accept look really cool completely different reasons. I know I could make it more, but no point to it. The 993 is the speed demon (and its not fast enough for me either most times). If I'm to spend any real money to go faster, it'll be to throw a big motor in the 914 some day or step up to GT3 money

Seven in a speedster! Yes. I'm 6'-3" and have a mediocre back on a good day Plus will a worn out bug motor even do seven hours strait Suppose I could tow it up there, but where's the fun in that?

I have a place across the street from the beach and it'll be vacant most likely next month. Beautiful weather for open top driving............bring the party to the beach

Jack

Jack,

Make sure to keep me posted on the trip. Love to meet up for a beer, lunch, whatever you'll have time for. If you have time to make it down to Carolina Beach, we'll most likely be down there and it should be a beautiful time weather wise if you care to come by. We have a really nice view (at the moment) from our decks

I'm just guessing by the Raby motor, your speedster is much nicer and more capable than my little beater!  Closer or not, the only way mine gets there is via towing and that's no fun. I towed my 993 up to Gatlinburg when my wife's friend let us use her mountain vacation house. That was a hike, and the TOTD was closed after all that!

I'd consider a less mountainous location to drive it to within a couple hours, but seven is just to much. I don't feel like testing my Hagerty road side assistance program that far away that badly

That's pretty funny.  Email me with your  email address and tel # and let's get together when we gety to Wilmington---I'll contact you the week before.

As far as road trips in our Speedster--it was upgraded in many ways  to become a great long distance cruiser.  We commonly do 650 mile days in 12 hours including 4 stops for gas which takes an hour.  So 11 hours driving plus 1 hour stopping. (8 gal tank). We average 65 on the road with lots of 75+ stretches.

The real mileage beast around here now though is David Stroud. But even before installing a Suby engine and using a stock 1600 cc enfgine he was doing crazy high mileage trips.

Most of these cars are Sunday morning coffee run vehicles and that' is a ton of fun too but we wanted anvil-like reliability and long distance comfort.

It's all good, isn't it?

You sure got that right, Jim. I just looked at the clock and we just turned over 41,400 and it had 8,500 on it when we bought it in September 2010. We took it down to Lake Placid, NY last Thursday and over to Wells, Maine on Friday. Up and down the coast for a bit with plenty of Lobster breaks. The weather was great. The Soob continues to to run well. So well, I may replace it with a new engine from CCR over the winter. My engine will be available as a package, ready to bolt in and turn the key.

Forgive me for saying this (all due respect)......but that sounds like retiree talk When you have businesses and young kids etc.......we folk just want to get to wherever the hell we are going, as soon as possible and let the clear liquids flow! Don't get me wrong, I yearn for the day when that theory can apply, but for now, my theory is "fun should not be a lot of work!" That's the big reason I got out of racing......to much damn work for unequal amounts of fun!

As for the Asheville thing, you're welcome to come in whatever car you want - Speedster, 993, or whatever.  If I can't fix my brake fluid leak I may be in the BMW this year, myself.

I'm game and due for a Myrtle Beach weekend trip sometime with the wife if you're so inclined. A long day with lunch in there would do too. I need to get a top and windows for mine first before considering taking it anywhere though. Top is on order, may have to get the windows too. Thought I had an original set found in Europe but the shipping is a killer! May have to pony up for over priced vinyl ones here in the states.

I'll figure out how to do that Jack, or private message or something (hadn't figured out how to use this site yet).

"Retirement Talk"---far from it.  I'm 73 and still selling more businesses in Central AR than all the other business brokers combined.  BUT I make my own plans that include a lot of great travel.

Jim works at his business full time + and is the record holder for miles in a Speedster as far as I know.  His car is pristine---I'm thinking he gets a new one each year judging from the appearance of his Speedster because it always looks brand new.

John Hallstrand is another high mileage guy and holds the record for the very first East to West Coast drive.  Somebody disabuse me if I'm wrong.

Jack that tongue and cheek was mainly directed at Jim's "journey" comment.

At 73, all I can say is "go man go!". That's awesome to be that good at what you're doing. I can't find a good broker either business or Real Estate to save my life (they're all hacks here!).

Ditto that entire short paragraph! I bought my first house at 22-23 so to be 21 again and know what I've gathered over the years........oh man!!! Then there's the feeling better and more energy and no gray hair......
