I bought an OLD replica in April this yr. the VIN is only 6 characters long. It's a nice little car. I think I was very lucky. I had a Porsche shop check it over carefully & it was deemed  to be in great shape. Yesterday, however, the clutch/gears gave me problems. After driving for about 20 minutes, I could only get reverse to work. Then, after resting a while on the shoulder of the road, I got it into first. Then, of course, the engine overheated, vapor locked. Finally, got it started & got it home in first.

My husband is very handy with cars, airplanes, etc. He found the problem. There is a single nut securing the clutch cable & it had loosened. He tightened it & put a lock nut on it to keep it tight. Now it shifts smoothly into each gear.

Glad I found this group. Hope to chat more in the future.

Cheers!

Welcome, Kate.  There is nothing wrong with having a Porsche shop check out your replica.  However, most replicas, especially the old ones, are really VW's with a Speedster body.  Sounds like your husband may pull duty as your mechanic.  If not, a reputable air cooled VW shop in your area will be a good source for future work, and likely much less expensive than a Porsche shop.

Like Jim said a Porsche shop will most likely charge 4x VW rate per hour.  Hubby of course works for a Steak dinner. The original VW clutch cable adjustment was a large single wing nut with a couple of nubs that kept it from backing off.  A shortened clutch cable is a spare you will want to carry.  You can buy a normal VW one and a dune buggy shortening kit or get one from your manf already shortened.  The cable strands break and the cable becomes longer.  Also add a new fan belt (for generator or alternator).  Check to see if it is glazed or slipping - as that would cause over heating.  Keep a spare belt with the clutch cable. A gas throttle cable is a good spare too - again shortened or a shortening kit.  If car set for awhile before you got it - check for mouse nests in the cooling fan and under the cooling tins.  A good blast of air might tell if there is a nest.

Welcome to madness.

You guys are great! I went to the Porsche performance shop b/c that's where I had my other real P-cars checked over for events. They are actually pretty reasonable. Also, I needed the car checked over right away & didn't have time to research a VW vintage shop. I know the replica is a VW mascarading as a P-car. After my husband worked on it, we found another issue related to the clutch, so I will find a good VW shop. If anyone lives in the Tampa, FL area & has a favorite shop, give me a shout.

Thanks again!
