I found it on, of course, the Samba. It was in Hungary and was purported to be working (how well, I'll soon know). $80 plus shipping, a good deal (trust me).

After a bead-blasting, paint, a new decal and an hour's worth of polishing, it's ready for installation on the new engine compartment firewall.imageimage

Did you remove the cover and polish the relay contacts with emory paper to make them like new (as the rest of it looks)?  And as mentioned by DSRTFX;  They are repairable, usually by a decent, local shop that does starters, generators and alternators.

Those guys in Hungary have a counterpart named Pavel in Poland for anything VW Gas Heater-ish.  If Pavel doesn't have it, you can't get it.  Once I found that out, I found ways to get something newer that also worked (because what I was looking for he didn't have and couldn't get).  Pavel is cool to email to, though......Sharp, too.

Greg, the firewall is aluminum, it was supposed to go in last week (and did, for a test fit) but I've been too busy with our business to get back to the shop.

Gordon, yes, I took the cover off. I cleaned-up the contacts and adjusted the voltage regulator contacts, they were way too far apart and had been arcing for some time. The current regulator and cut-out contacts were fine.

There's an outfit in Los Angeles that simply replaces the guts with a solid state regulator and keeps the outside stock. Problem with that is $175 so I'll see how this one functions first.
