I took delivery of my new VS at 5am Aug 15 in CT. This is a replacement for my 2000 that was rear ended and totaled. It has not run well from the time we unloaded. coughing, back firing, spliting. Between 2800 and 4000 rpms when accelerating the engine does not respond then jumps forward in all 4 gears. In two visits with my VW Porsche mechanic we have adjusted the linkage, replaced the spark plugs, points, condenser, coil, Adj valves, installed ground strap, balanced the twin carbs and adjusted a tension spring on the carbs. It runs better for a short time then it starts over again. The is a 1915cc with twin Weber 34s. Kirk has been very cooperative and paid for the work no complaints there. Any suggestions for the next step would be appreciated Thanks Dan

Dan, there is a lot of information on this site as well as others regarding similar engine problems.

If the carb's have idle jets, carefully remove them and clean them thoroughly. On larger Webers, if the idle jets are plugged then similar problems will occur. Also, go to your local auto parts store and buy a can of carburetor cleaner. Spray where the carb's attach to the intake manifolds and where the intake manifolds attach to the cylinder heads. If you have any vacuum hoses also spray them and their fittings. If the engine stumbles, then you have an intake leak.

Keep the spray away from the top of the carb's as any fumes that travel down the carb's will also make the engine stumble.

good luck
Dan - what part of CT?

There's a 4th Gen VW shop in Greenwich right across the Porsche dealership - Freccia Bros. Frank Jr & Sr. You're walking distance from the Ferrari, Lambo and Mercedes dealerships. You could hang for a bit if needed!

I think the Ferrari dealer also had a Veyron sitting on the lot the last time I passed by - enjoy, Mel
Thanks for the help I live in Old Lyme Ct Yes the timing has been Adjusted I took the car to my mechanic again yesterday he cleaned the idle jets reajusted the fuel mixture different setting on each carb??? Now running much better. He has suggested the next step would be to take the carbs off and check the float Adjustments. What do you thing?? Thanks Dan
I've solved a backfire problem before by tightening the exhaust into the heads and checking the pipes themselves for the first foot or so from the ports. Eliminate the possibility of a hole of some kind by using an oven mitt, wrapping it around the pipe anywhere air might get in and holding pressure while it's running.
I'd try that for sure.
Dan, I do hope you'll be going to the Vintage meet this weekend at Lime Rock Park. I can't make it this year but almost always go.

Checking float levels is a great idea, as well as cleaning out all the crap that will be in there(yes, even brand new!). Also make sure you are getting 3 to 3.5 lbs. of pressure to the Webers, they won't run right unless this is the case.

GOOD reading:http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/articles/carbs101.htm

I just went thru a bout with dirty gas. I had to siphon the tank, fill a few gallons and "rock the boat" until the Facet ran clean. Install new CLEAR gas filter to absolutely rule out gunk getting thru.

Still some sh*t got thru and clogged the accellerator pump so I did the "bitch slap"

Dont know if your twins will respond to this discipline !!

My Facet (the cheapo, not the cylindrical) only puts out 2 psi but the single Weber DGEV loves it.
