my new VS has 500 miles and is running terrible.  Here are the symptoms:

fires right up but doesn't sound right.  (It sounds like it's not firing all cylinders)

the more throttle I give it , the rougher it gets.

Took the air cleaners off and noticed that the butterfly valves stay closed no matter how warm it is.

Cant find any kind of choke wires or choke adjustment.

The carbs say solex h40/40

is this a choke problem?

any ideas???

Stan,  I know you put your HVAC customers first however this year it's Stan's turn  !....You still have until April 18th to make your room reservation....  DO come out to Carlisle it's something that every speedster owner should do. The only issue is once you do Carlisle and participate all the antics ,  you cant help but repeat the annual pilgrimage............. See you there Stan ...... YOU Can Do It !

Dear Mrs. Galant,

Please excuse Stan from all scheduled Kitchen Duties and business related jobs for the week of May 15, 2017 so that he may come out and play at Carlisle with the Speedster big kids. Of course, we'll keep a watchful eye on him as it is his first Carlisle experience. We would also like to extend a invitation to Mrs. Galant to supervise Mr. Galant as you see fit ~

All the plugs were filthy.  Put four new ones in gapped at .028 and it runs perfect.  Obviously something is wrong with the carburetors so I'm just gonna take it to Euro Fix in the am and let them lean it out.  Thanks for all the bel guys.  So glad I found this group!

I'd suspect that a plug wire may have not been properly seated to the plug if all you did was replace the plugs and that fixed it.   I say drive it another 500 miles and see if it happens again before doing anything to the carbs.

Carbs are evil things.  When I had Henry install a new set of 44 Webers on my IM he drove the car for a week to sort out the carbs.  When I picked the car up it ran fine and off I went.  I drove to the Vancouver Island ferry and everything was fine, but leaving the ferry I noticed a very slight stumble at a specific rpm.

Over the next couple of weeks the stumble got worse, to the point where the car was not fun to drive.  Henry came over and drove the car back to his shop and I never did find out what was wrong with the carbs.

You can give them all the love you've got, but as soon as you turn your back they'll kick you in the a$$.

The other side of the coin, Troy, is that the carb issue might have been why it's been sold with only 500 miles on it.  A lot of new buyers are clueless about these cars and buy them on the "cuteness factor", only to find out they're not exactly a modern EFI jump-in-and-go type of car.

TY056R (can I call you Ty?):    If your guys at Euro Fix are good with carbs (since we don't know what's in there) I would let them have a go with it.  If one was sooty I might suspect a plug wire or plug.  If ALL were sooty, and after only 500 miles, I would really suspect the carbs being out of whack.

An overly rich condition, in addition to fouling the plugs, will dilute the oil and wash lubricating oil from the piston rings/cylinders which is probably not good during engine break-in.  Since there is no choke, engine will run rough until engine warms up - shouldn't take more than 15 minutes though.

I think it's worthwhile to have valves and timing checked/adjusted.  Then perhaps fuel pressure and jetting/or fuel mix adjustment and the carb synch adjustment.
