Ok, all you smart, tasteful people, I need some aesthetic guidance. I was fortunate enough to score a set of those new 10-hole wheels from Carey. My original plan was to have him paint them the same color as the car, and then add chrome trim rings to go with my baby moons. The problem is that I can't find the chrome trim rings online. The VW parts places have "beauty rings", which are definitely NOT what I want. I don't want to cover all of the red, just the rim next to the tire, leaving the red band between the rim and the hubcap. Anybody know where such trim rings can be sourced?

If they aren't available, I have several other ideas:
1. Leave the wheels silver and go for strict originality.
2. Get 'em painted red and forget the trim rings - in other words, a copy of what Mickey had.
3. Get 'em painted red with a contrasting pin stripe on the rim. I'd probably go with a tan that is close to the whiskey tan of my interior, or maybe...?
4. Have the wheels painted the contrasting color, perhaps with a red pin stripe.
5. Or...?

Votes and ideas are welcomed.

It's OK Lane, you can steal my idea. ;)

I really like the color matched wheels, especially on Red cars. I may even go that route again at some point (I think it's looks REALLY cool with the wide 5's minus caps too). Carey had a dark green car at Carlisle that had matched wheels with black drums (I think?) and I remember it looking really slick in a bad-ass old school way.
Lane, I think it would look great with the chrome ring set up. Depending on what you're looking for some white walls might even give it that extra touch of "elegance".
I like both sides of these cars. One part of me really likes the "weekend racer" look and the other side likes the vintage coachworks style (see 09 calendar Oct shot). Anything but the everyday speedster, if there is such a thing.

Lane, use this in photoshop and see if it helps. ;)

Gentlemen-

I'd not ever recommend running "no caps" unless the car's got wide 5 (or later Porsche 5 lug) hubs. 4 lug just looks goofy exposed, unless it's with some permutation of 914 rim.

These wheels were made for caps- so that the wheels will look original, even though they have 4 lug hubs. The purpose of the whole thing is to obfuscate the fact that the car has 4 lug brakes.

I agree with Marty- IMHO, chrome caps need chrome wheels, or it looks "inexpensive" (to be as diplomatic as I am capable of)- WAY too busy. It's probably too late to get these wheels chromed (as they are already together), so I'd go with the brightest silver powder-coat possible, and then run moon caps.

Just my opinion.....
I agree with Stan on the cap thing when it comes to 4 bolts, but "F" the chrome! That looks sooooo ghetto unless you have the spinners on there, and that takes us back to the "coach works" thing. Don't get me wrong, there are some cars that chrome wheels look "right" on, but so few were done with chrome wheels (or so I've heard) it screams REPLICA! If you want a vintage look, do what is vintage. Look at old photos and see what the cars looked like then. If you want something that resembles a speedster but has a modern twist than go crazy and bling it up.
I got so many more compliments on my car after I painted the wheels to match than I did before or since. On a red or blue car it looks great. I don't think it looks "inexpensive" in the least. That's like saying that Oct 09 calendar car looks like a stripped version of the speedster. Hell, that car looks better than most of the cars I see on this site.
Lane, if you want your car to stand out a little you have to do something others don't. Trust me it's NOT a shame you didn't get those wheels chromed. I think practically every car Kirk & JPS makes has chrome wheels on it.
Marty - Scroll up to the picture of Mickey's car with the red rims, and then scroll down to Terry's car with the black rims and trim rings. Combine the two in your head. My car would look a lot like Mickey's (without the chrome strip on the side) but would have chrome (actually stainless steel) trim rings like Terry's. It'll make may car look a bit more old-school, and a bit different than most, but it would still be close to period-correct.

Vince - Ever the reliable purveyor of lithe luscious lovelies. Oh yeah, there were some wheels in there too, right?
