Well my old school vintage BMW (1955-1969) and VW Beetle experience (64 Beetle and 79 Cabrio) has led me here.

I am looking to sell some of my vintage BMWs for a 356 or Speedster replica.
I can do all the maintenance my self so that is not a problem and this will be a third fun car in addition to our regular vehicles ('07 BMW 530 Sport and '07 Honda Odyssey).

Question is, do I buy a rolling chassis, or used on eBay.
I can get two very good VW engines ASAP, so that is not a problem.
But eBay prices are so enticing, since it is just a toy anyway.
New turnkey is too expensive as I only have $20K in cash to spend.

How do these things drive anyway, just like a real low beetle?

TIA for any advice.

Welcome Grey!

I rode an old BMW (it had a very neat luggage rack on the gas tank) for a short time before switching to Matchless, then on to Harley. You're really gonna love it here, everyone's SO smart and we all know everything about EVERYTHING! Why, I'm surprised that the government doesn't just put us all on retainer and use this forum as a think tank . . .
Grey-

Had a 65 BMW Stieb sidecar. It was VW powered. Pretty nice bike you have.

As a long time VW guy, I can tell you the ride and feel are simular to a bug (performance wise) but the driving exp. is much better. When I bought my first Speedster I thought it would be like most replicas, rattley with a lot of body flex. I found niether to be true. Real solid. They are shorter and respond quicker than a bug. THey are also roomier than a bug. More side to side room. A lot closer to a Ghia than a bug I would say.

Gray,
That R 50 is beautiful. I share you affection for the vintage Beemers. I did a '75 R90/6 a few years ago and loved that machine. I rode to trailer week back in 2000 with two of my nephews. After several thousand miles I convinced my Frau to join me on a few Sunday rides and a few months later we were aboard a new 02 R1150RT. The ABS made me lots more confident with two up and since then we've logged nearly 40,000 miles. Up the coast of Maine is still our best trip (we ended up lobster fishing with a local fellow). I still miss the R90 but once the wind fills the helmet aboard the RT, the lust for old fades a bit, but I love seeing well done vintage.
I bought a "kit" last year and am in the early stages of building my Speedie. I enjoy the hours in the shop as my time killer and find great pleasure in the small steps as it comes into being. My suggestion is to lurk here and read the posts. There is a wealth of knowledge, but even more valuable is the experience of other owners and drivers. Some of the builders are more trustworthy than others and you will find whom to trust and whom to avoid, just by asking and lurking.
There's a broad range of variation in the details of each car and you should consider each in deciding what you'd like to drive or build. Your experience with VW's will be valuable in understanding the application of the technical stuff and the results. In retrospect, I wish I had found this site before I bought my kit. If you can find the opportunity, join these guys for a gathering of any kind just to view the cars and hear what fellows like and don't.
There is very likely someone near you whom you should consider visiting to inspect the car or cars and feed brain with ideas.
Thx for the warm welcome guys!

I'll fit right in since I am also a "know-it-all", although the wife begs to differ - haha.
Also a shop-hound, spending many nights after dinner in the garage tinkering on something or other.

Someone mentioned a sidecar.
Over the past few weeks I have put almost 500 mi on this rig '67 BMW R60 + '52 Steib TR500 sidecar. Even riding to work 1-2x a week.

Looking forward to meeting the local crew and getting into this!

BTW, the way I will fund this purchase (and the way I got the wife's approval) is to sell off my BMWs... oh well, from one thing to another.
