Hi everyone,

New member out of Milwaukee, WI.  Like the rest of you... fell in love with the Speedster replica.  I've been on the sidelines for some time now, reading articles, and learning about the fun (and madness) of owning a Speedster replica. Would appear I have the itch bad... only to be cured by a Speedster and not Desenex.  Haven't been able to find any replica owners here locally to ask questions.  Looking for answers, I stumbled upon SOC this weekend.  Over the past three days have spent countless hours reading various posts with valuable information and commentary from various members.  Started with the wonderful article "Ready for a Speedster Replica?"  Had to become a member.

Looking to buy my first Speedster, but have so many questions. I'm thinking for the first go around to buy a used one, somewhat well appointed, built by a quality manufacturer.  Seem to keep coming up with: Intermeccanica, Beck’s, Vintage, SAS or JPS.  The resale price of the Intermeccanica and Beck's would seem to suggest a better quality product. Not sure if this is a correct assumption.  Vintage Speedsters seems to be also be a member favorite. Not being that familiar with them, wondering if anyone might be willing offer their opinion or guidance?  Not looking to restore one, but tinker around and personalize to my tastes.  Will $20K-$28K, depending on manufacturer, condition, age and options be reasonable to expect? I'm good mechanically and don't mind tinkering around. Have a great local VW parts and service center close by if needed.  Any thoughts or direction being offered will be very much appreciated!

Hoping someday I too can have you say... "welcomed to the madness"!

Jim

Welcome to the Madness Jim! (there you go; it sounds like you're already infected. No turning back now!)You could even walk into one for less than you expect, but your price range is (I would say) reasonable. Keep in mind that these cars are ancient technology (the whole aircooled VW thing), and that means making time for regular maintenance as well as the roaring around! Any used Speedster, as long as it's fairly well sorted out and taken care of will be fun. Al

Al,

Thanks for the kind comments.  Grew up restoring muscle cars... even had a kit car based off an old VW pan and air cooled flat four, which I managed to skin a few knuckles on.  Looking forward to learning more and making that first purchase.

Hey everyone!

I had the real pleasure of meeting Rich today.  We talked for hours... and to top it off he was kind enough to take me for a ride in his Speedster.  It was a real thrill, an outstanding example of a Speedster.  Rich had nothing but great things to say about SOC and all of you.  Looking forward eventually getting my "Speedster Jones" fixed, and meeting more of you.  Now that I'm back on reading more posts... so much for going to bed early tonight!

Rich - cannot thank you enough for your time. The ride was way much more than I expected.  Love the car, the history of your car, and the personal touches you've made to it.  Beautiful car and even more fun ride.  Thanks for answering all my questions... and talking in a way a newbie would understand.  Thanks for your patience... can hardly wait until we each have a car and go to a show.  Best to you, your family, your adorable wife and Jock (sp? outstanding poodle in the pic).
