I just signed up and I am now reading the old posts so that I can make an informed decision on purchasing a turn-key Speedster. I have owned several VWs and have a basic knowledge of VW mechanics. I will be lurking for a few days while I do some research.

Right now I am trying to make a decision on how much money I will invest in this purchase. I will be calling the builders and will write some owners to get a better feel for the market.

When I think I am armed with just enough information to be dangerous I will post again with some questions.

Cool Site,
Brian

Yeah that's a good way to go. Click on makers and look around. As far as pricing is concerned you get an idea there as well. All Speedies are great and now you have a choice of old air-cooled or even Subaru water cooled. Amazing huh? But one thing is common, you can never get that stupid grin off your face when you drive it. Hope you make a decision soon as to enjoy summer. Have you written off the used market?

Oh and Ron had a great idea, post where you are located.Maybe you can actually drive one and see and enjoy the Speedster way of life and learn the ins and outs.... that's what we're here for.

Cheers

Hello Brian. Welcome to our open and welcoming site. You will find lots of examples of Speedsters here and also a number of Spyders on the companion site, Spyderowners.com. If you have not already, take a look on the "Makers" tab on the home page to get a feel for what is available. Also, be advised that many of us started with used examples, mostly like new, that are also available in abundance.

In the meantime, good hunting.

I agree with everyone else. There are lots of goofy grins in your future. I can't reccomend strongly enough at least considering a used one first to see what you like and don't like and if you buy right there should be very little depreciation if you start with a used one priced fairly.
I bought a used one first and don't regret it one bit. Funny when I started my build it was so simple, buy the time I got done, I'm waiting for European Scripts that don't even exist yet. Be careful, a new build can be daunting if you don't know what you want and can be expensive if you don't control yourself.
I have a question. If I am looking for power equal to, or above, a built 2110cc engine (150-160+ HP), should I consider 4 Wheel discs as a must, or will front discs be adequate for spirited driving? I am considering a 2110-2165-2275-2332 if I buy an air cooled Speedster. I think it is important to get the basic items in a build all listed out before I approach a builder so that I can cost shop, knowing up front what options I consider to be basic to my order. Is this a good way to proceed? I will still consider a water-cooled car, but it is hard for me to compare it's power, etc. to something I have a basic feel for: a VW aircooled engine.

Brian
Brian, it seems you have owned a few VWs in your past, and have ecperience with them. You seem to know the available engine sizes, etc. If you were putting a 2275 or 2332 in a bug, would you say you need 4 wheel discs, or discs and drums? Whatever your answer, it's the same for a Speedster. Is that an OK answer?
Ron
Brian, I think what your asking is, does the 2210 VW engine compare to the modern 2.2 subaru engine? Maybe I'm reading too much into your wording? But you need to understand that a liquid cooled car has more torque and hp at lower RPM's. This is because of several things but the biggest being the subaru engine has electronic fuel injection. On a subaru, you will generally speaking, have a much lower gear differential or rear end and then have an overdrive. This can be accomplished with the air-cooled engine, but you have to be willing to except some of the routine maintenance and inherit cooling concerns with that type of engine. If you go to the knowledge section you will see some posts from George Brown who posted some great ways to help in the cooling of the aircooled engine.

I would normally give you my large VW displacement speech, but since you know about VW engines, I think its safe to assume you already know about some of the pitfalls in having a large VW engine without proper parts and proper cooling.

Do you like working on the VW engine, and is something your willing to do at this point? If the answer is yes, then continue with your research and then ask for advice and make sure you check with someone about who and what engine will be appropriate for you.

The good news is Jim Ward has a 2210 and lives in Oklahoma so maybe you could setup sometime to go see his IM and get a feel for the power of that engine. I think most people would say this is plenty big enough in a speedster, but it does fall a little short of your stated goal. Keep in mind the hp on the VW engine many times happens in a higher RPM band, but you can get together with a builder to build the power down lower in the RPM band to make it more like a modern engine. Below is a dyno of a 2.5L subaru engine hp torque stock engine.
I believe its 1800, but I'll try to find the exact number somewhere I saw it. It also depends on what extra items you put on versus what you decide not to put on? Here is a link to the page with the information you asked for??? Its 1950 with a automatic and 1800 with the optional 5 speed.
