I showed up at sas just hours after this car was loaded. So I missed taking a look at the finished product. I was in Gatlinburg on vacation and have been very interest in the sas product. I saw two silver and one red 356s being worked on. Two donor subras parked out front. no car was near completion.
A frame was being welded. I think Paul was doing the welding. Steve gave me a great tour and I was impressed with his passion for this car.
How long did you wait for this delivery?
CSW is another maker I'm looking at, they use honda and toyota motors in their versions. Any feedback on them?
Earl,

I'm guessing you've already heard all you need to hear about CSW on the other thread. Stay away.

I'm surprised that it took this long for somebody to ask how long I waited for the car. After all, SAS is famous for two things-- It's the only mid-engine water-cooled car, and it takes a long time to get one!

The great thing about this website is how it allows people of similar interests to pool their knowledge, helping everybody be better informed and make better decisions. So I'll tell the truth and let the chips fall where they may. From signing on the dotted line to getting the car was two years and two months for me. I know that sounds nuts to some, but I didn't much mind the wait and the finished product is spectacular. And anyone who's been behind the wheel of Hoss' red cabriolet or any other SAS car will attest that they're something special.

My wait time is in keeping with the last few cars to come out of Knoxville. I do think there's reason for optimism that they're picking up a little speed. Right now there are two stunning silver cars being assembled side by side, with another painted cab in the shop and moving in right behind them. So many cars in the assembly stage at the same time is a new development, and bodes well for the guys in line behind me. Oh, I'll be surprised like everybody else if SAS coupe #2 makes it to Carlisle in time to make O'Brien pucker up. But still, it's encouraging to see them picking up the pace of production.

I owned a couple of original 356's in the 70's & 80's-- a '61 coupe and a '59 cabriolet-- and loved them dearly. But over the years I came to appreciate cars that start every time, don't require pampering, go fast and stop quickly. So I'd written off ever getting another one. My first drive in one of the Subaru-powered speedsters, Summer '06, changed that. The long wait time ain't for everybody, I'm sure. But as I sit here today I'm glad I did it.

The car should arrive on Wednesday or Thursday. I'll report back! PR

Sorry to have been an absentee speedsterowners.comrade. I am, indeed, busy up to my eyeballs with a new job.

Car arrived safe & sound almost two weeks ago. Beautiful and zippy. I've only put about 250 miles on it. Besides having little time, my primary problem is a snafu at the DMV.

To make a long story short, my Certificate of Origin from SAS lists the car as "Specially Constructed", which apparently in the other 49 states is the correct language. Unfortunately, in the Golden State, "Specially Constructed" cars are, by DMV definition, cars that are NOT made by a licensed vehicle manufacturer and cannot be registered as a new 2008 vehicle. California's technical term for my car is "Remanufactured", as it is produced by a licensed vehicle manufacturer and it contains at least one part that came from a donor vehicle (Subaru drivetrain, the rest is brand spankin' new).

The bottom line is that I'm being re-issued a new Certificate of Origin and I've enlisted the help of a friend who owns a car dealership. So hopefully my next trip to the DMV will be more pleasant than the two and a half hour disaster of last Monday. In the meantime, I've been told that it's illegal to be driving the car.

So I'm, uh, not driving it. Yeah, that's it. I'm not driving the car at all. No, really. It hasn't been out of the garage in days...

I'm still planning on taking you NorCal guys up on a rendezvous at the brewery in Auburn once I'm legal.
