The bumpers are actually quite strong because of the way they're formed but they sure won't take a 5mph crash :-). The best brackets I've seen are the ones that attach to the bumper brackets. They're like a C clamp that captures the bracket with a mounting hole on top to bolt the fog light to. Then if your in a 5mph crash you've got a lot more to worry about than your fog light brackets :-)

From the 356Registry -

Hoffman was convinced that Americans wanted to buy cars with names like "BelAir" or "Fairlane". So, in the spirit of American marketing, Porsche began putting a "Continental" script on the fenders of 1955 model year coupes and cabriolets that were sent to the United States. Unfortunately for Porsche, Ford Motor Company claimed the rights to the "Continental" name and threatened legal action, so Porsche changed the name to "European" for the 1956 model year (production of which began in the fall of 1955). Cars delivered in Europe did not have the script.

Probably why we got the Audi FOX and VW RABBIT when it was called something else in Europe.  VW got weird with the "sports" names - Golf, Deby and Polo.  Then the winds thing - Scirocco (hot wind), Jetta (jet stream), Passat (trade wind), Golf (Gulf Stream). Shame they never got to "Fahrt" - as in ausfahrt and einfahrt (exit and entrance).  Used to be the numbers made sense - a BMW 318i was a 3 series chassis with 1.8L engine and fuel injection.  Now it seems # are just picked out of a bin.
