Yes, the other Vintage Speedsters.
Veyr nice paint, wheels and seat material choices. And a Mendeola suspension!

“the car rides on Mendeola front and rear multi-link independent suspension with Fox adjustable coilovers.”
“DMR @ $45K.
That’s car guy talk, not money guy talk.
“The car’s fiberglass bodywork is finished in metallic gray”
Who ya gonna believe, me or your lyin’ eyes?
Dont get me wrong, that’s a beautiful car. And it looks well done, despite the 90’s Lexus paint color.
He must have read this and just posted pics of the car from different angles showing how the paint shows differently in the light
This looks like a GREAT start for Stan's project X.
The seller bought the car on BaT for $60k (plus buyers fee) in May of '22.
It's and IRS car with full Mendeola, a 17" wheels/tires that doesn't look hideous, and Wilwood brakes with drilled and vented rotors front and rear. There is no Porsche badging on the nose, tail, dash, shifter knob, or horn button (there are "Speedster" scripts above the side molding, but they don't count to me). There is one lonely Porsche badge on the hood spear, but that's it. That may be the cleanest VW pan I've ever seen - it's "magazine-car" nice. The engine is speced decently (except for the heads, which I'm not wild about), and it's got MSD. The seats are wide and flat to fit the butt of the "not-young-anymore" guy who will likely buy this. I really like the leather the original buyer picked for the seats. It's got the coco matts the kids all rave about.
The guy who had the car built and then sold it for $60k lost a fair amount of money in the process. The money-hose was definitely spraying during this build.
I'm not wild about the paint, but paint is subjective. The car has no tunnel e-brake which may be a positive to some guys but would be a real negative for me. The current owner took out the Hoonigan-looking Mendeola shifter to put a stock VW stir-stick back in, which had to be an aesthetic decision, because the stock shifter is as vague as Bob Dylan vocals. Ditto the deep-6ed Vintage Sounds stereo head. The "rally clocks" (which as Mitch pointed out on another car are not really rally-clocks, but rather mechanical track and field stopwatches on mounts) are also a love/hate thing. I'm OK with 'em - they break up the dash over by the passenger where there is no P-car lightning bolt. A Heuer Monte Carlo set would be nicer, but then so would buying a Navitimer instead of my perfectly adequate Citizen quartz chronograph.
I've got this auction bookmarked because I'm curious if Kevin's observations hold - that it's only VMC Speedsters with professional photos, marketed by Cloud 9 that bring the big bucks (I suspect Kevin is right). Regardless, there's got to be something wrong, besides the obvious misstep of the original owner choosing a "no-cache" builder - the car has changed hands too many times and only has 1000 mi. Grandma didn't even drive this one to church on Sunday, unless church was in the garage.
We'll know tomorrow. I suspect the seller wants at least $65k to get his money back.
I doubt he'll get it.

WAY too nice, and too heavy - but everything else: yes.
I can already see the future. RNM, then you email him.
Lighten the ever-loving crap out of it. Sand it down, rattle-can primer. It's got proper suspension, BIG anti-sway bars and a steering rack.
Then HOON with a proper motor and transmission. And an EFI package from Debbie's Aircooled. The rest is already there.
I, too, am curious about this one. Especially comparing it's sell price to what Al Merklin got for his well-executed, Mendeola-suspended beauty a little while back.

Not in position right now, but I did laugh at the primer comment. It's just too nice (did you look at that pan?!). Regardless, I can't lowball a guy, and it's already past what I'd give for it. There is a black dry-sumped 7.0 L Z28 with "all the bling" (Bremos, Recaros, 6 sp Tremec, no A/C) on BaT right now for about the same money. There's a no-reserve RZ350 ending in a couple of hours stuck at less than $6500.
I thought I was the only guy who was looking at that Debbie's Aircooled kit thinking it was the deal of the decade.
Paint it Black, needs a better hub & steering wheel. VS shifter & its good to go. After engine peters out stick in a T4.

^ There you go, Martin. Your Florida car awaits.
I’ve got maybe 16k total in this 986 Boxster and I can drive it anywhere. The paint alone would be 10k; I‘ll roll the comfy Boxster for now😎.

Even Roy's brand new cookie cutter Vintage Motorcar auctions that have brought the big money are slowing down. Nice aquamarine just closed yesterday at 74K
There's a new one every week at least which is likely contributing. Red one just opened.

You are not.
Seems like speedsters that are less than totally stock, the value plumets, Mendeola, Outlaw etc. I'm redoing the flared CMC that has zero miles but has sat for seventeen years , it will hit BAT early spring and assume it will only hit the low $20's because it's a CMC flared version.

What color gloves and scarf go with that color blue?
The scarf is ALWAYS white. Goes with anything, even Lexus silver.
I do wonder about the tweed driving cap. Should it match the coco mats or contrast them?

I hear you, Marty. My less than ideal weather ride. 987.

It’s a 986 slushbox - I’ve got no idea about the gloves, but I’m pretty sure the scarf is a nice chiffon like Audrey Hepburn wore.
I never said it was fast, I’m just playing a part😂
White scarf, brown calf skin, with little holes for your knuckles. Not sure about the tweed cap tho, sounds more British to me -- MG, Jag, Austin-Healy. What sort of topper did the old Germans wear?? Something in leather I'd reckon.
Back to the car in question: 1 hr to go - $50k.
Auction timed out at $55k, RNM.
Someone threw out the "Arizona" question but to me that was a nice build with a lot of the right stuff. Having said that 55K should have been about the right number imo.
The BAT auction steam is running down imo.
Also reverve not (far from) met

That may be an outlier, because it may have been the strangest listing ever.
The first 8 photos on the listing were apparently taken under the bluest of blue LED lights - because I could have sworn the car was Meissen Blau.
It was not. It was a cream color. The photos were horrible. The description was even worse. Absolutely nothing about the car, just how the "president and CEO" of the used car lot was "here for you".
If there was a class on what not to do to sell a car, this listing could be Exhibit A.

I agree.
It says see their website for full details but there's no description there either. They do however have a few dollars in beautiful cars for sale so who knows? Not a great effort regardless.
Dang. There’s 3 more Speedsters on BaT this week. 2 VMCs and a VS. This bubble’s gotta burst, doesn’t it?

Another reserve not met, brand new and only bid to 52K
I don't care what month it is, I'm telling you the bloom is off the rose.

That's a Cloud 9 car and auction as well. You may very well be right.
There are very buyers that are willing to pay ~$30K over the price of a new VMC Speedster just to have it right now. Perhaps we've found them all.

The other VMC sold for $55 on Wednesday. The VS is at $40 w/2 days left.
It's red, and not guards red. For the Know-nothing investor set the only red associated with Porsche is guards red. Silver/Grey with baseball leather seems to be the money combo for those that wanna be a rebel without a care. They might possibly go for a period correct Porsche only color like auratium green.
Either way it'll have to wait. We're having the Hampton's house packed up and heading to Zermatt for the holidays.
At this juncture in the driving season, it would behoove sellers to hold off until early Spring.

It's Ruby red (C9 car) and a VMC Speedster of the same color sold this time last year on BaT by C9 for ~$68,000.

Well what do you know? I guess that's the thing with auctions, one never really knows why anything in particular happens. Every trend has outliers, every inexplicable home run is matched by an equally weird strike out. To quote a mid-way barker, "Ya pays ya money and ya takes ya chances. Step right up!"
I just want to get my car done so I can drive it before they put me in the home.
