I'm prepared for the many recommendations, but really, how do you get them on without denting the heck out of them?????

I can't help you getting them on (never had the nipple caps) but you need the wishbone tool to safely pull them off.
I just hold them against the metal flat springs that hold them on and give them a whack with the heel of my palm to mount them. simple and easy and won't dent or harm them. I have the best ones from Sierra Madre and they are pretty stout. I like them a lot.
The "whack" Jack (Whack-Jack? ) is talking about should be a glancing blow near the edge where it's less likely to dent. I had baby moons and never dented any of them.

The original tool is just a “U” shaped spring wire with crimped ends. It hooks in the holes in the caps and you lever it off with a screwdriver against the rim.

Thanks everyone. I have the tool. I use it on my moons. The moons go on as all of you have suggested without a problem. Got the nipples for a change. Used the same technic as the moons but they will not snap into place.

It's a Zen thing.

I was afraid of that. I have a set of originals and I don’t want to damage them in any way!!
You might have to slightly grind the nubs off the rims.

Be daring. Don't run hubcaps. Only the most gentlemanly of us can run hubcaps.
Go cap-less. It's like a lady going bra-less. Freeing and lighter.
