I hoped to get some attention using this as a topic. I've asked this before and am unable to find the thread about it. I'm wanting to purchase half moon hub caps with a Porsche emblem on them. What I am finding is a hub cap with a nipple/emblem combination like on SpyderMike's car (see his pix). Because I wouldn't know what to do with 4 more nipples, I'd like some advice on locating smooth half moons with emblems if they exist. v v

Vicki: I had an old catalog from Car Custom and they had the Moon style hub caps with the Porsche emblem as well as the nippled ones. Their website is "www.carcustom.com". I went to the site but it's pretty extensive so here are the phone numbers (I don't know if they're still the good) 626-969-7967 or 818-969 7967. If the phone number is still good tell them the item is in catalog #700, page 157 item # 28-AC601711. These are the type I have on my car, see attachment, there's a round indentation that the Porsche emblem sits in. I doubt if the prices are the same since I paid $18.99 each.

Vicki:
The moon hubcaps with an emblem were designed for 1964 and 1965 Porsche 356C cars with disc brakes. These are actually stainless steel and highly polished. Part #901.361.031.00 or .01

The nipple ones were for 1963 and earlier 356B cars with drum brakes and VW type 5 lug wheels. Part #644.361.031.11

The "baby moon" hubcaps are for 356A and 356B cars 1950-1963. Part #nla.361.002.00

Stoddard Imported Cars (www.stoddard.com)has these caps, but they are pricey. $63 each with a gold plated enameled crest for the ones you are looking for, new. Part #9013361.031.00

VW shops will have the hubcaps you are after with a different crest, Wolfsberg. You can buy the hubcap crests seperately Part#644.559.801.00 enameled, and 901.559.801.01 for raised chrome crests.

Good luck!

Nick--my backside looks fabulous. Thanks for asking. Color is perfect and fit is extremely accurate. I'm very pleased. And with a new hydraulic clutch assembly it's easier to drive. Is really backfiring a lot, so I'm having a new exhaust put on.

Tom--so, the original Spyders had plain half moons?

Several different things commonly cause backfiring, and the exhaust system might be one of them. But if the exhaust system is not leaking around the flanges where the pipes bolt onto the head, then buying a new exhaust may not be the first thing you want to do (unless the exhaust system is trash anyway).

Generally, backfiring at idle or under acceleration means a lean fuel mixture, and is also usually easy to fix. Clogged idle jets are a favorite, as are leaking intake manifold gaskets.

Just a thought . . . .

Re Backfiring!
Popping/farting/banging in race tuned cars is common especially with shortened exhausts with little or no baffles in the silencers.
You always have to compromise the state of tune if you want it to go fast but also run 'quietly' on the road.
If you look at the pictures I posted of the GP exhaust system you see there's not a lot to keep it quiet.
My car 'pops and 'bangs' on hot days ( its minus 4 here at present!) but only on the 'over run'.
I haven't attracted the attention of the boys in blue ( police) with my car other than admiration.
But then again I don't have the ability to 'flash' my eyes at them! So watch it if you go for a loud system.

Hope that helps Vicki

The history of Spydie's backfiring: none for the first 6 months, then sudden onset of loud backfiring one day, flange was cracked and I had it rewelded same day, backfiring immediately stopped. Now 6 months later, same thing. Flange was again cracked, but this time welding it didn't help. After my mechanic inspected it, he believes the exhaust is trash and called and told Dean so. SO--Dean is sending a new one. It is being powder coated at the moment. v v
