I looked around in the database for nitrous but didn't see much -or missed it. I'm at the beginnings of an engine build and wondering about nitrous. Not sure I want to mess with it but WTF? Have any of you played with nitrous? Worth it? What has to be done during the build to prep for it? I did order the Hot VW Vol 3 book which probably deals with this. Just wondering what you guys thought. Cheers.

Seriously, N2O has a lot going for it-- it's power when you want it, and not the rest of the time. The reason we are being cryptic on this is that building an engine to run it is neither inexpensive nor easy, and a hot-running, detonation-prone engine is probably the least desirable platform to try it with. Having a cooling-system dependent on a skinny little belt that is prone to being thrown during abrupt changes in engine speed isn't really a recipe for success either.

N2O is a lot like illicit drugs-- the more you use it, the more you want. A 50 shot becomes a 75, becomes a 100. Before you know it, you have some really cool paperweights that used to be the pretty expensive bottom end of your engine.

Some of the big-boys have tried it. I'd like to try it. But I'd make darned sure the entire engine was built for it, and it wouldn't be cheap or easy.

Stan's line reminded me of something I read once, " N2O is like a slut- you know you want to, but you're afraid of the consequences".

In all seriousness, nitrous is very fussy- the temp and pressure changes of the bottle, if not observed and accounted for, can turn a motor into junk instantly. It's a power adder for the serious gearhead that is willing to learn what it takes to manage it, and can afford to blow up a few pieces along the way. As Stan said, it's very addictive, and the bigger shot used, the more careful you have to be. I would discourage most Speedster owners from this. Al
