The new carb came in yesterday. It is installed and after a bit of tweaking the car is running great. No smoke!! The engine seems to be quite a bit happier. We only have one problem, the throttle cable is too short by about an inch. Any suggestions? Do we need to run a new cable is there a way to extend what is already there?

I will be listing my IDF 48's

I broke an accelerator cable last year at the pedal while at a stop light. Got my trusty vice grip to clamp the broken end and used the vice grip as the pedal to get home.

Went to a hardware store and bought 15 feet of 1/8" cable and proceeded to fish it through the tunnel. It comes out before the rear suspension and then you have to fish it through the doghouse. Wasn't that terribly difficult but was it ever a dirty job. I think I threw that shirt out after. Attached with cable attachment thingy's from the same hardware store and it's better than the original cable as far as strength is concerned.

Jim, the shoe string is flippin hilarious!!

Kevin, I have listed the carbs on ebay and set the reserve at $200. We will see... the more I get the more I can use toward my list of things I want to do to my car. I live in the cold northwest and I really need a heater!! I can't enjoy my car like I want to most of the time up here.

I know this is the wrong forum to post it but here is my listing. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=STRK%3AMESELX%3AIT&viewitem=&item=110281656822
Fixed the throttle cable today (or I should say my man did). Took it for a test drive and WOW!! what a difference. I can't believe the difference!! She actually has some horsepower now. Before with the dual carbs there is a hill close to my house that when I climbed it I would have to downshift to 2nd and then barely make it up the hill. Today I took that same hill in 3rd and was accelerating up the hill!!! She drives completely different. I cannot tell you how happy I am. I could not keep myself from smiling when I got home.
Denise; glad everything worked out. I noticed in one of the pictures I can see the garage floor from the engine compartment. That's a no-no in terms of engine cooling for these motors. Make sure the top of the compartment is completely isolated from the bottom and keep a fresh air intake by the firewall as well as the existing one in the decklid.
This is how the car was when we got it. That was going to be our next question. Where can we get a boot that would fit? My husband is very familiar with VW engines as he has had quite a few but this is our first speedie. Will a stock boot work? We also had to put a hole in the decklid, there wasn't one. Where would you put the fresh air intake in the firewall? Does anyone have pics they can share?
Denise, Danny: 10-4 good buddies. I love a story w/ a happy ending. This is the same carb that Alan is using in his new hot-rod, right? And a very nice installation job, by the picture. Next bit of info: what is the gas mileage? Probably better wait a month or so until you can measure it under "normal" conditions, vs. what you are doing now, with your foot well into it, and the SEG crowding out your ears. Fun times!
Took it out for another test run last night. Aparently whoever owned it before had little knowledge on how to work on a car. The shifting has been a challenge and we discovered last night the plate that is under the shifter that keeps it from going into reverse was upside down. It shifts soooooo much better now. We also need to fix the ground cable because the way it was run it has been rubbing on the linkage and the insulation is worn through. Thank goodness it was ground and not hot. Now that is running better I was able to experience the car on a windy road and wow!! she corners like she is on rails :-)
