Just want to drop a quick hello to everyone here. I am a performance shop owner here in Nor Cal and have loved Porsches since my mom strapped my car seat into her 73 911S and drove me around it in everyday. I recently ran across a CMC speedster replica in someones back yard, the original owner had past and the car was sitting outside for about a year. The guy had the original owners manual, build instructions with each step crossed out in pencil as the owner built it, brand new top never installed, all the trim never installed, the list goes on. He told me it had some hot rod VW in it but he didn't what except it had very low miles. I didn't know what he wanted for it but he said it would run with some gas. Needless to say He blurted out I need 3 grand for it. I said I'll give you $2500 and we settled on $2700. At this time I knew ZERO about these cars, but after doing some research I basically stole the car. I took it to my local VW race shop and the owner a long time friend said "where did you get this car, I know this car, pop the hood we built the motor and trans. I popped it and he said yup, this is the one. He was like mind asking what you paid I told him and he laughed. He proceeds to tell me the original owner was in some sort of pissing contest with his buddy and had more money then sense and told him to build him the baddest VW he could. Come to find out the motor is a fully race built 2276, the shop owner said they motor cost the guy about 9 grand and the trans was another 4. At this point I am getting a little giddy at paying $2700 for the car. It was pretty badly oxidized but I am in the process of restoring the gel coat. Here are some before's one kind of after, and I should have it pretty good this weekend then will paint it after I have fun with it this summer. Our shop builds custom turbo systems so It will prob end up with a turbo on it at some point.. Since this is my first speedster of any kind, any advice on where to get parts etc or shops in the Bay Area would be great. Well thats my story and I'm sticking too it. Looking forward to talking with some of you. Tony
I guess I should add I got it back to the shop, pulled the tank, and put the fuel line in a gas jug and it fired right up when I hit the key and idled. I drove it around the block and they were not lying its a fast car. it has 48 IDA webers on, front disc brakes, full stainless steel brakes lines, IRS with full coil overs front and rear. Whoever built this car did it right and I am happy to get into the speedster world with such a nice specimen... I'll post pics of the engine and car after I am done with it this weekend, got new wheels, putting disc brakes on the back, and a bunch of other little stuff, to get it ready for summer...
