After nearly a 6 month battle with the Georgia DMV to get a title for my 2003 IM, we are thinking of moving to North Carolina next year. Before I drop the subi engine in my car, has anyone had any Speedster experience with the N.C. dmv? What kind of hoops will I need to jump through - again? Inspections? I might want to leave my vw based air-cooled  engine in it , until I get the new title.... I have a clear GA title in my name...

I live here in NC and had my CMC with 74 VW chassis so I'm exempt from inspection. The process to title was painless as the state police inspection unit handled it and even came to the house to apply the NC registration numbers on the chassis.

Your situation is different for sure as its a 2003 but I would contact the state and our DMV offices are not run by the state so when it comes to plates the answers are varied. When I went for my plate to register the first office said I would have to post a bond and some other nonsense. I drove out into the county at a small local office, showed proof of the makeup of my car and walked out with a plate 10 minutes later.

After that I just went to the state traffic division (car guys) and they made the process of tagging the chassis easy, this is to make sure nothing is or was stolen.
