At what point does a genuine Porsche 356 Speedster cease to be anything more than a collection of tubes, a fiberglass body, and an old Porsche transaxle case stuffed full of aftermarket racing gears . . . ?

When you decide on the future of your Speedster, I have extra 356 doors and inner panels, rear deck lid and grills, interior trim components, Pre-A and SC umbrella e-brakes, steering column and wheel, metal 356A dash board and gauges, metal Pre-A dash with 914 gauges, front SC disk assemblies, front trunk liner, SC seats and runners/stanchions, 914 seats and runners, Speedster replica seats and runners, SC shifter, boot, and knob, genuine Porsche script and engine designation script, and Ruetters side body badge.

If you wanna push your ride into the "it's a real Porsche, because . . . " territory, I can hook you up with enough to cause a fuss. You know that it's usually all about the numbers and enough metal to justify them and a race/race based car has a LOT of slop between "it IS" and "it ISN'T" . . .

Now that is one hell of a question.

Maybe we should start listing all the "foreign content" just like the new cars that contain parts that are manufactured all over the world? A per-centage of authenticity so to speak?

"What year is that thar' car? Well it's a '49, '50, '51, '52, '53, '54 automobilleeee" (Johnney Cash)
"one piece at a time . . . "

I wonder if they even realized that it was happening? All of that fabrication and race damage repair and reinforcement. Cut away some metal here, replace it with fiberglass there.
Chop away the numbers to fit the fuel cell, twenty years worth of modifications has left them with a tube frame Speedster replica.

Did they realize that it was happening or did they start writing the ad and at the end of it, after reading it through say, "Holy Crap ! ! . . . we chopped away all of the PORSCHE ! !

I mean, really, they have nothing left to sell. Sure a complete history (with log books) of a car that no longer exists, and documents covering the dismantling process.
But that's no longer a Porsche 356 Speedster ! ! They're selling "air 'n hair" and a whole mess of documentation attesting to that fact.

How cool it THAT ! ? ! ? ! ? ? ! ? ! ?
I'm kinda wondering now, just how many genuine Porsche 356s can I make out of a single body shell?

If the body numbers no longer matter, and it only takes a smattering of genuine Porsche sheet metal along with a shitload of tubes and a thing fiberglass shell . . . just what IS the equation for real vs repro?

Doors and a cowl + fiberglass and tubes = genuine

Front and rear decks + windshield frame = fiberglass = genuine

See what I mean? It honestly seems that you could combine anything, toss in a MINIMUM of genuine 356, have it inspected and stamped by an SCCA scrutineer and go racing for a couple of years. After three years you come out of it with a genuine Porsche 356 Speedster.

I mean, we've done the same thing with Triumphs. Turned a whole lot of lowly TR7s into TR8 race cars, I just thought that it would be tougher to do with 356s . . . guess not ! ! !

I have the right VIN plates. Does that make my car worth more, or less? If I keep the VW-ness, it's a really cool mod-job that I can beat up. If I keep the Porsche numbers, it's 'collectable.' Since I have both, I'm torn between driving it for fun and keeping it in the hopper as a work in progress.
There's already been so much work done to this crate that the pedigree is diluted beyond even AKC registration as a mutt.
And I hope I'm not out of turn here, but that blue car looks like it doesn't have a single wire in it, or anything resembling a gauge. Cosmetically, it looks cobbled together. I can see the gussets at the corners of the tubing, so I know it's built well, but it really doesn't have anything going for it in the looks department.
Does anybody here actually like it enough to even spend the three grand it's at now? Obviously their reserve hasn't been met, but I'll damned sure be watching where it goes in the next few days.
Thanks, TC!

Hey, remember the old Ironsmith VW pan based type 35 Bugatti replicas? Now there is a real money maker . . .

Talked with a fellow in parking lot once, he had glass replica of a Jaguar SS100 - the old Swallow replica from the 60's. He insisted it was a "real Jaguar". VW gauges on dash, phoney fiberglass louvers on hood (not even cut open), and lots of other totally non-original stuff. Either he got taken or he thought I was ignorent. He seemed happy, so I just let him talk.
You know what's funny, David. I think I met that guy. I was driving the spyder home from Los Angeles and stopped for fuel somewhere around the Firebaugh turnoff on I-5. Can't remember the exact place. This old fella at the fuel stop was pretty adamant that his Mercedes SSK was the real thing. He said he paid "plenty" for it but it was worth a fortune, if he could just get it running...

I could see the VW pea shooter exhaust pipes and the coarse fiberglass work along with the shitty fake wire wheel covers. I wished him the best in his project, fired up the spyder and headed for the freeway....

There's no fixin' stupid.

I think that Carey is waiting for that, don't recall. It's still in the car, but I want to be sure to remove everything as a single unit down to the front beam, and then all of the pieces from the beam rearward. I know that he's got his dibs in for the date-code wheels.

Too much snow to deal with the car right now anyway, for now, I'm makin' all of the replacement parts in the shop. Nice and warm.

Once everything is off of the car and nicely restored/rebuilt/refurbished I'll be sure to post them here first, just not until the early Spring.

Thanks !
