OK, just to show you all I haven't been setting in front of the TV too much I want to let you see what I have been doing to my Speedster. FIRST, I got German VIN and Color plates and stamped my true VIN number and proper color code numbers into them. Then I rivited them to the inside door jamb. Cool !!

NEXT, the motor just screams VW ... had to change if this is truly a Replica. I pulled the dog house shroud and painted it silver/grey just like the early 356 Super, then I moved the gas lines behind the dog house and made a new pivot for the linkage which moved it down. The fuel pump area is now blocked off with a plate and an electric fuel pump is hiding under the frame. I removed the alternator and installed a new 12 volt generator and put a regulator on the firewall just like original. The Coil is relocated to the front of the dog house shroud and an original 356 Oil Filter can is located where it belongs. (the can is non-functional and the braided lines coming from it go to nipples brazed into place to simulate the original) The generator even has an original 356 end nut (very hard to find !) I obtained an early 356 oil filler/breather can and machined a fitting to replace the billet oil filler that was there (turned out to be a bigger job than I thought!) Finally, I found all of the original decals and put them in place. VOILA !! Now "Poquito Perfecto" looks like she should.

My next area to rework will be the radio. I plan to keep the new AM/FM CD player but disguise it as a Blaupunkt pushbutton like the original. Just wait until you see what I am cooking up now.

I hope you like it and it gives you ideas for your own Speedy. Plan on seeing it in person in Paso Robles, Carlisle and Loveland at the NATIONAL SPEEDSTER GATHERING in September !!!!! :-)

Will,
The oil filler/breather was interesting. First we had to make a fitting to screw into the existing tube and then machine a top on it that mated with the flange on the filler. The breather tube was smashed and repaired as much as possible and finally installed a rubber tube to complete its location (doesn't show). Ended up needing more fooling around than expected but it really came out nice.

I wish I could find a set of older looking air cleaners but no luck so far. The Knecht cleaners would be great but there is not enough clearance. I would settle for the oval air cleaners with perforated covers it I could get a nice set and if they would clear. Anybody have another suggestion ??

Happy Trails,
Dusty
Kelly,
You are right about the heater hoses, but remember I am in Colorado. I like to drive later in the season and the heater helps just a bit. My real 356 (T-6 B Coupe) is my example here. It has small "risers" that blow heat at the carbs. You are also right when you say most don't know what they are looking at anyway. I just do these detail modifications for my own fun and to amuse all of the SOC folks.

Be sure to check out my latest posting about the radio.

Happy Trails,
Dusty
