Odo works... but the trip gets to 9/10 mile and clicks every time it wants to go another 1/10 mile.... So basically my trip meter is stuck on 9/10 and clicks like it tries to move. wonder what is broken inside ? Something simple I can pull apart and tweak? Its not that big of a deal as the Speedo and Odo work. They are Beck Gauges that I bought with a disclaimer... so I am not at all complaining

Have a look here.....Could be your issue? 356, 914 and a lot of early VDO style gauges have similar internals.

I just did this fix on a 914 trip, fiddly as fek !! But it seems to have worked....

I may have done that and broken it... I don't recall... But I don't think I did.... Thats lame if thats true.
If I don't fully press mine's reset button - sometimes more than once - it will occasionally do that. When the car is stopped press it a couple of times and see if that helps.
Gremlinx, it's not lame, it's madness.
OK... I will reset it a few times stopped... and see.... with 122 miles on the unit.. sigh..
New gauges are digital trip and odometer
you can take them apart and see what's wrong.
if you need more gears, take apart a stock VW speedo. IIRC, they use the same plastic gears.
i pulled mine apart to see how it worked (i was bored). very simple design and it would be easy to see what the problem is with yours.
the hardest part is taking off the chrome trim ring on the gauge. i used a jewlers screw driver, very slowly pried it off.
My trip meter has been screwed up since the first time I ever reset it (well within the first 1,000 miles on the car).
Can't remember if I was moving or not, but I kinda doubt that it makes a difference - it'll die either way in pretty short order. I just live with it and ignore it.
