If you were in the "SC Low Country" you were near my place. Ya shoulda let me know. I'm in the northern suburbs of Charleston.
Damn, Rich You were I live! Chimney Rock Park is in the township of Lake Lure! I'll send the route numbers via email.
I was hit at last years run on the way to the Friday night dinner. Merlot has been a Special Edition under the care of Carey since October. The accident was a hit and run by a vehicle that came 4 feet over into my lane. So, I've be come a hater of people that cross the double yellows herein the mountains. I'm thinking about putting a Wolo air horn in Merlot.
Have you ever stopped at Brass Town Bald?

Lane first you have to decide to put up with a loud Yellow motorcycle, then understand we rarley do like Asheville will be. usually stay one night and move on there is so much wonder to see in this country of ours. We spent most of a week up and down the coast got to Myrtly Beach and hated it so we just took off. Thats when we found Ocracoke Island and the ride up to Nags Head. Harley folks there showed us the Back roads to Black Mt. one great journey. And what better way to head back to MS but by way of Natahala valley to Chattanooga.

Drivers planning to come to Asheville should look up Lane, Tom and my self. This will allow you to express your desires and needs for this run. Looking forward to talking to all at Carlisle. Let's cross our fingers and wish Tom good luck concerning a few laps around Bristol Speedway.
I plan on bringing my laptop so that those interested can see the old Chimney Rock Hill Climb. This event was second rated hill climb with Pikes Peak being number one!

This thing is looking tempting. It's quite a haul from Baltimore, but tempting.
Hey, Carlisle is quite a haul from Charleston, but it's worth it. So will this be. I'll be making an announcement at Carlisle to drum up more folks.
Ed,
Come on down South! I'll let you drive my Lafer. I'm driving to Carlisle, but going the old tourist route. If I can go North with a new knee, you can go South.

Got a lot of folks interested in this trip while playing it up in Carlisle. Both Henry Reissner and Carey Hines are thinking about coming with their wives. Tom Raymond has gotten us booked with the BMW manufacturing facility in Greenville, SC (about 1 hr south of Asheville) for a plant tour on Friday. I will be setting up the Biltmore tour on Sunday, leaving Saturday for a cruise. That particular event is still in the planning stage.
Remember, Friday, 9 Sep. through Sunday, 11 Sep. A block of rooms is set aside at the Hilton for ~$148/night. It's a gorgeous place. I'll send out particulars when I get the paperwork.

Thanks, Aaron! I'd like to do it in Bridget & we have a tow bar. Karen has not said NO. Definite maybe, for now. As for the Lafer, that'd be a treat. It would feel a little like a betrayal, though.... We'll see.
If there are laps involved, we're there!

Not at Bristol this year. Tom, do you think the BMW folks would let us do a few laps on the track there?
As you enter the BMW plant, on your left, you will see one of the latest models being produced hanging verticaly from the wall about 10 ft. overhead.....This is the official door prize.....If you can get it down, without hurting your self or the ten or so security personel trying to shove you out the door, then its yours...( until the swat team arrives. )
I LOVE this facility.....It was years ahead in design when built, and they revamp things continuously.....I worked for HELU welding technologies....We designed, produced, installed, and applied various types of welding guns for the production lines. We did not do the robotics, but did install our products on them.....

It's great to see folks planning to make the drive to Asheville. I believe that Alice and I will get there a day earlier to relax a bit and make it a mini vacation. These gatherings are so much fun that they go by in a flash!
Lenny C. mentioned that there was some conversation about Alan Merkin using a car hauler to take 4 cars to Asheville---great idea and I think Lenny and Danny Pip would be two, with Alan's car making three.
I hope they work this out.
Lane--how about a drawing sort of like Carlisle with all the money paid for the tickets going as one grand finale prize? (Or split it into two prizes?)

Peter, the dates are described earlier in this thread, but they are the 9th through 11th of September. Like Jack, I will arrive on the 8th, but I will stay nearby with my in-laws that night. The plan is to tour the BMW facility on the 9th (Friday), take a cruise in the mountains (itinerary still to be determined) on Saturday the 10th, and tour the Biltmore on Sunday the 11th. I plan to stay over Sunday night at my in-laws as well. I will spend Friday and Saturday night at the Hilton. We would love to have you join us!
Jack, I am considering ideas as you suggest, but this will be a smaller gathering, so I am not sure how well the prize thing will work. This week I am hosting a Critical Design Review at work, so I don't have much mental bandwidth left. I'll get back into planning this weekend.

I just did the math for the 950 miles round trip at a rock bottom rate to cover basic costs for my car hauler to take 4 cars to Asheville, not cheap. Next idea ?
Drive?
Drive?? Good idee.
It ain't long, so get on with it ,Lane. I don't know what is in store for my ability to help this year. The second knee surgery could or not put me on the sideline for a couple of months. The status is an unknown until the surgeon takes a look inside. Only time will tell!
Paperwork is on its way back to Donna at the Hilton. I will deal with the Biltmore this week. Tom is handling BMW. That leaves Saturday's cruise for someone. I was hoping you could set that up, Aaron, but I understand that you're walking wounded at the moment. We may need to do some over-the-phone planning on that part. I guess we also need to pick a place for dinner Friday. Have you spoken to the folks at the German restaurant?
Lane,
I can handle a lot from home and will do so. I'll get hold of the Bavarian Restaurant. I can do the planning for Saturday drive also. If the job is done arthroscopicly and is just a clean-out, I'll be OK! I'm just sorta in limbo, waiting for the call to come on up toi Pardee! Maybe tomorrow, I'll know something.
Linda and I drove the Parkway South to Mount Mitchel to escape the heat...Wow, 65 degrees cool! The Intestine has a 102 curves from Cow Hill to Highway 64/74A and 9 intersection. Most are curves that have elevation changes and some are horseshoes while the others are hairpins! The elevation changes are the real challenge. Yea! This is my normal route to Asheville.
Looking at the Parkway South to the Pisgah Inn, late lunch like last year. Return route down off the Parkway, return to Asheville and the hotel.

I CAN'T MAKE IT.
Sounds familiar, yes???
No....really. Our daughter's getting married in late September and we'll still be up in New England until late in the fall.
Starting to sound like GERD, though. Gotta work on that...

Good News...I just got the call to show up! The date is this Thursday at 1500hrs. Outpatient surgery is a good thing!
Aaron - I'm sure everything will go well! Godspeed for a quick recovery to being 100%!
HI Lane I am planing to attend Please count me in Peter
Aaron:
A friend of ours in Beaufort - long retired Marine Sr. MSgt - went through the same thing; had his knee replaced, then did something minorly bad like stumbling in his living room and had to have it done over again after about two months. Second time went aboiut the same as the first but he ended up with this HUGE bandage around the knee for the first week, forcing him to lie low for a while and keep activities to a minimum.
After the first two weeks, he was walking with a cane All the better to keep his grandkids in line) and then has been walking unaided since. Been about 6-7 months now and he's doing just fine.
Good luck.

Ok folks, I have the countersigned contract from the Hilton. Give them a couple of days to get everything in their system and then start making reservations. Woohoo!
Now to call the Biltmore...

Great news Peter, maybe we can head up North together before you veer off to Atlanta.

Hi Nolan That is a good Idea Peter
Ok folks, we are go for launch! The Hilton has created a web page for us to use to set up our reservations. Use the following link: http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/groups/personalized/A/AVLBPHF-SPD-20110908/index.jhtml?WT.mc_id=POG
The price is $33 cheaper than last October - hooray, September! They have one error in that it appears that we have until 13 SEP to book our rooms :-)
Let's get 'em booked quickly and try to fill up the block this year. Heck, I'd love to have to go back and ask for more rooms.
