From "Joe Pea's" wife: Well, guys, I just have to set the record straight, lest I seem like the big bad wolfette. Those Fuchs look really cool, but I fell in L-O-V-E with the baby moons on "Emily" when she arrived -- oh, so pretty in white -- from Canada. I've never been into cars, so this is a totally new experience for me. But hubby (I posted this at night, so I know you're blushing as you read this at work in the morning!), she's your car and I'm just along for the ride. I think all you 356 nuts are great, and I love how you love your cars. Keep on crusin'. -- Gin
That car can't be selling for $18,000 US. I think Ron was on the pipe a little to much this week!!

He really wants to get $28,000 US.

How many times do I have to tell you Ronny not to sell yourself short, or your Tub for that matter.

Good luck Ron I hope you get all you can for that great lill speedster of yours..
Crap. I emailed both you and Stan last night. Double crap, as it was a long post...okay, I'll give you the highlights:
Yes it's for sale. Yes I'm stupid to sell it. Yes, I'll lose a bundle, and I'm seriously looking at a Subaru WRX STi as its replacement.
I have to admit that a WRX passed me, while driving down the freeway, and I didn't give it a second glance. It looks like all the other Japanese compacts. So why am I selling my beautiful IM for a plain Jane Japanese car? Only my psychiatrist know and he's ethically bound not to tell. He will tell you that I'm nuttier than a fruitcake (which I'm sure that some of you already know).

Ron
Was it something I said?

Reading this post makes me feel like one of my friends is getting a divorce or something.... Don't be too quick to jump! These things can be worked out you know. Have you tried counciling.

Actually you have been making noises along these lines for a while now, but it still comes as a surprise.

Your brother Ron.
Think pretty hard about it Ron. My 19 year old daughter's Miata starts and runs well every day, doesn't leak a drop of oil on the ground or water in the cabin, makes good heat and cold air, is cheap to own, cheap to operate, and cheap to insure. My car (on the other hand) is up on jack-stands in the "sacred place" in the garage waiting for an exhaust (or valve adjustment, or carb de-bugging, or "fill in your problem of the day here"), hers is parked in the street and runs like a banshee on a wal-mart oil change every 5000 mi or so.

She was gracious enough to let me drive her car today. It was tight, quiet and smooth. It handled more neutrally than my car will ever hope to. I could hear the stereo. But I missed my car. I was in a better car that cost a third as much (soon to be a quarter as much if I can pull the trigger on a 2110 from Pat Downs) as my car- and I kept thinking about my speedster. You will too. A WRX is a fine automobile, but it's no Intermeccanica. Sell the truck and the single cab, sell your furnature if you have to, then buy the WRX, or MR2, or S2000. In my experiance- when you have poured as much of yourself, and time, and money into something as you have in the your car, you'll regret the day you sell for a long, long time. I've done it. Steady, man.
Is there any type of drive better than a top down-sunny day drive in one of these cars? I wish we had more sunny days up here in the 'rain forest'. I envy you guys in the south, with your year-round warm, sunny days. Of course, some would say that having fewer days makes those days all that for special.
Ron
You're right, Ron. We up here in the Great White/Wet North spend half our lives waiting for warm, dry days, and half our days sleeping or in darkness. So, the actual time we drive these cars is quite miniscule.

Ah, but the satisfaction when all elements fall together. A well running roadster, bright sun, a slight breeze, twisty roads and an exhaust note that just hums.

Aye, matey. Lower the hood, secure the bonnet, clean the windscreen, fill up with petrol, and away we go.

The joy of the open road.

Poop! Poop! (as Toad would say)
as someone who built his car in the north (NY) and 2 years ago relocated to the south (Fl) i can impart 2 self evident truths. (a new yorker in florida? what are the odds)

1) You can have 365 perfect driving days in a row, and in my speedster, everyone of those rides will be as glorious as the first.

but.....

2) I would gladly trade any of you 2 - 3 months of beautiful weather just to have some decent roads. This place is so flat and straight I am about to lose my mind.

I built this car for its handling, and i don't think i turned the steering wheel in 24 months!

As for my advice for selling your baby.

You got to do what you got to do. Take lots of pictures (OK, lots more) and take solace in the fact that you can always get another one, all those times you said "if I only knew then what I know now". The next one will be even better.

There may be nothing better then your first love, but most of us are happy we didn't marry them!

Best of luck with your decision.

Rob
Rob, I'm a transplant too (Chicagoland to Tennessee), also a little over two years ago. We have virtually year-round driving, except when there is the occasional brief snow, but if we lost a month total of driving for the whole year, that would be very unusual. Also, we have great roads, hills (Tennessee people are sometimes referred to as "ridge runners"), twisties and wonderful scenery. My American Motorcyclist Magazine always has a advertisement for "riding the dragon" which is one long, hilly, twisty two lane highway which runs between Tennessee and North Carolina. Bikes galore are found on this stretch of road and a good drive for a sports car too.

In our village, we have a number of transplants who retired in Florida first and found it to be too hot, too humid and too changeless in terms of scenery; we have four seasons here. If your work took you to Florida, you probably didn't have much choice, but if not, know that there are other options.

Also, you said something about odds of finding someone from New York, where I grew up incidently, in Florida. You meant pretty good, right? Especially in Mi-Yaaaam-eee.
John H.
Hey Ron.......I'd hate to lose you on this forum, so in light of the poor-weather-for-open-car-touring you have there in the NW Rainforest, why not go the Beck 356 Coupe route?

Closed top, roll-up windows, better heat (or with an ESPAR, GREAT heat!) and all of the same handling and attention-getting characteristics we all know and love about our cars. PLus, it's a little quieter inside, while still growling outside.
Hey John,
You must be talking about deals gap. if memory serves that would be 318 turns in 11 miles? lots of banked curves as well. My buddies and I try to get up there at least once a year. (with bikes, not speedsters) That's how bad we have it, we ride 10 hours just to ride your roads! :-)

I should be up there in september with the bike (hopefully i will have traded the harley for a triumph thunderbird sport by then)

I believe I will be in Nashville in July as well. I am really looking forward to that, haven't been to Nashville yet.

It was work that brought me here, but it's not that bad here, you just have to know where to find the roads.

Rob
Wow John, that car looks awesome. When is the ETA? As September rolls closer we should make plans. I would love to see that cabrio runnin' the twisties.

As far as your "old man pace", don't worry, we just like to be able to lean. You don't even have to break the speed limit for that!

I actually love livin' here in st pete, i just like to complain about the roads.

Rob

i am having flashbacks to when my car wasn't finished, and i just couldn't wait to drive it. i hope your wait is almost over.
Hey Rob, roger that on Deals Gap. I haven't ventured out on the run with my Beeser, probably because I don't trust the Avon Skidmasters. I should do it sometime at an old man's pace. Maybe we can arrange a meeting in September. The Cabrio would love to twist a few.
John H.
BTW, St. Petersburg is nice. My Father-in-Law lived some of his last years there at Sunny Shores, the retirement community where some of the scenes for the movie "Cocoon" were filmed. Dad almost made the cut, but I think Ron Howard thought he was overacting. Knowing him, I suspect that was true.
Ron,

You would have big withdrawl pains if you sell the car. Why not rent it out but not on the weekends. No, that is a bad idea. Bring it down to the Parts Obsolete show in McMinnville in June. Might get some action on it down there. You would have a solely VW-Porsche audience. The swap meet on Sunday may produce some results. Besides you could hang with us other Replicar people, Like to meet you and say "Howdy."

Bruce

P.S. I agree with John, leave the larger engine in it! B.W.
Ron just needs an excuse to do some more work on his car. Now that it's finished, he's wondering how he's going to fill his spare time. If he pretends to sell it, he can work on it more. I think he should repaint it - that would help it sell better. Or how about changing the exhaust again? No, better to change out the pan completely - that would take all summer.....

Hey, what about swapping everything from the 911 pickup into the speedster, and vice versa? That would be a challenge.
Ron I think it is a great option.....just sell the car if they start to beat you up on the price, your answer is simple....I will come down on the price only if I can switch the engine...I would think this will help if you get an interested buyer who is a little over budget, but anyone else would love to have that engine
