Hey All,

Got home today from a little cruise in the Speedy, and opened the engine lid to let her cool off. When I opened it up, I saw oil all over the right side of my engine and the oil cap lying on its back in the pan. It seems that the cap is vibrating off while I am driving. Any suggestions on how to keep it on? Has anyone else experienced this? I am sure I can't be the only one.

Thanks,

Mark

If you use one of those alum. oil filler extensions, don't use the plastic cap. Use the billet version of that cap.
The plastic cracks so the cap never seals or gets tight. Then it vibrates off and now your engine is breathing out that oil filler hole.
The engine loves it, but it's oil laden breath makes a mess of your engine compartment.
Been there, done that.

i have both, the plastic (on my bug) and scat breather style on my speedy, just don't over tighten the plastic ones, and put some oil on the rubber gasket so it does'nt stick. If your using a stock style cap and it's loose, bend the 2 tabs on the cap, not rocket science. I've never had a issue with all of them, but i guess i'm just a lucky guy!!!!

My cap is metal - chromed to match the engine. Now it reflects all the oil that was blown out! ;-} Lane - do me a favor... call my dispatcher and tell him to quit working me so damn hard! Between you and my wife, maybe he will listen! HA! HA! In the past 2 weeks I have been home 2 days. And am heading out again this weekend. Love the overtime - but I hate having to show my wife my ID when I walk in the house to prove it is really me!
I had the plastic cap and it tened to vibrate off often. Of course it always made funny sick engine noises while doing it. After about the 3rd time I got the aluminum cap and use an "o" ring in it that makes the mating surface between the cap and the tube. Without the "o" ring the aluminum would vibrate loose also, with "o" ring, no problems anymore....
Same thing happened to me on the way home from picking up my car Mark... except it was my fault and it was the dipstick not in all the way. 4.5 hours at 3200-3500 rpm through the mountains and I had a nice mess on the right side of my engine bay...those engines are evil creatures that try and puke whenever they can from where ever they can...still haven't cleaned it all up.

Hey, when is that VW meet you talked about.. this friday?

Hey James - the Cruise-in car show at Birkdale Village is this coming Saturday, June 16th. It officially starts at 7pm and goes to 9:30pm, but you can show up early if you want. It looks like my schedule has me going back to work on Sunday, so wx permitting, I plan on being there! As far as the oil cap - I need to look to see if it has a rubber gasket. If it doesn't, it soon will!

Well - I went down to my local replica shop today and inquired about a new oil cap. They just happened to have one that fits perfectly! They were generous enough to give it to me at no cost as well. I asked them about the cost of a disk brake conversion on the fronts only, and they quoted me almost $1,800.00! YIKES! I really appreciate the $5.00 oil fill cap, but I think I will look elsewhere for the brake conversion...
