Oil change?

No sealant needed.  Just use the paper gasket supplied with an oil change kit.

Dang it Yrekadad!  We had a perfect chance to mess with a newbie.  I was working up some story about monkey poop scooped up during a full moon mixed with...  and that's as far as I got.

If you have a sump drain plug so you never have to remove the sump plate(s), the slap it all together with Permatex.

If, OTOH, you'll be pulling the sump plates off whenever you change the oil, put them on with the paper gaskets, but moisten the gaskets with grease before assembly (to make them easier to remove, later).

a little dab o' grease, some silicone, or maybe monkey-poop -- all good to help soften the gaskets up some and then make a a really good seal so you don't have to wipe up oil drips and will not have to take 'em off again for a good while.  Subsequent changes, just undo the drain plug, and that will do it.

The paper gaskets for the sump plate today are porous (they are literally made of pressed paper) and oil will weep through them if they are not sealed first with a gasket sealant of some sort (I've heard of guys even using hairspray to seal them before installation).

I was getting a small oil drip on the side of the sump plate, so in my infinite wisdom(lol) I decided to remove it and ordered a new gasket set, crush washers and an oil filter screen. The new screen has smaller perforations in the screen than the old one. The old one looks it could pass a pebble thru it.
