CMC pan based-new to Speedsters but sort of old school VW.

Rectangular oil cooler is located behind doghouse. Almost looks like its blocking fan intake. There are a few additional holes---2"--3" diameter for additional cooling. Engine runs dual 40 dells and has 15,000 miles. Picked it up before miserable Ohio winter set in. SO, will this do the job cooling? Have read some on relocating, various models, fans etc--not sure where to go.

Carbs come back next week--car sat since 08--cleaned tank and lines already. Has large sump and oil was clean but changed it and put in Val Racing 20-50 with new filter. It did fire up prior to starting work but found rt manifold was loose off they came and it was sucking air no doubt.

Actually... what I've been saying is that the holes and all manner of fans and whatnot don't really do anything. I've just been trying to be nice about it.

The cooler above the trans is something I have no experience with.

I used stainless lines on my installation (did you read it?) with AN fittings.  That usually runs $10 per foot and $10 per each end fitting.

Expensive at about $150 for the complete installation, but given that it's possible to run 300# pressure on a cold start through them, not a bad investment.

Cheaper, though, to get a pressure-limiting oil pump cover set at 125# (Berg) and then run heavy-walled rubber hoses with crimped AN fittings.  My two rubber hoses have been in there for over 6 years and still doing fine.

Just remember that the two hoses running from the engine to the filter/cooler get flexed a lot with engine operation and stainless hoses are really stiff so you might consider heavy-walled rubber for those two.

Since these cars are prone to overheating in the first place due to cool air starvation, I would be very leery of putting the oil cooler above the transaxle if you also have an air inlet hole in the firewall.

Yes, the Gene Berg oil-pressure relief cover is a good piece, I use one. The only Berg part on my car, in fact.

Stainless hose is nice, but like Gordon said, too stiff. Plus it's a real pain in the balls to install. I used AN fittings with nylon mesh-covered hose, works great and so far haven't worn at all, still look new. I don't like the fact that the stainless hoses will abrade everything that they touch.

The hoses all point to the driver's side. Mounting everything there makes the most sense.

If you use a Mocal sandwich-type thermostat on your filter base, it gives you nice pick-up points for the cooler and saves the need for a bunch of hoses. The stat is for bypass, so that when your oil is cold, you won't circulate through the cooler. It's a quality piece.

I used the void behind the firewall (CMC) to mount a mesa 72 row cooler with fan.

I'm located in the south and last summer it kept the car cool. I moved the fan thermostat to the return line after the cooler whereas in the photo it was after the mechanical oil thermostat.

I'm using thick walled rubber hose and have it covered where it comes near the exhaust system and I have a sleeve which goes over the oil filter for FOD protection for the filter.

The second go around on this will be to make metal lines for all the body mounted stuff and rubber lines to motor. Its always a matter of testing and sorting before committing to a final solution on these cars.

Mike--excellent pics of a very clean ride.

The 3 holes with screens--where is that exactly located? On the other side I suppose is the fan??

If you have more details about the routing of hoses, wires, power from where etc it would help me out. Engine coming out this week to do some clean up-fix butt drag sound proofing etc. Got the car in Nov--minor project car.

How are the chrome heater boxes holding up--look outstanding. I'm looking to go from j tubes to heater boxes to provide defrost and floor heat--mine is also CMC narrow fender.
