Oil cooler placement

I plan to use a full flow oil system with external oil cooler on my CMC with a Type IV motor. Can anyone give a recommendation on the placement of the cooler The instructions say to put it in a place where there is good airflow. My motor has a 911 fan so there ain't much room between the motor and the decklid. Thanks for the help.

Martin I also have a 911 type shroud, but mine is on a type 1 motor. I've mounted my cooler just above the tranny, on one side. It also has a fan because the cooler is not in any direct air flow. I also put in a 180 degree thermostat, so the fan doesn't come on until the oil to the cooler reaches 180 degrees. Hope this helps.

Martin, I installed an oil cooler with a thermostatically actuated electric fan, which turns on at 180'.
I mounted it in the rear driver's side wheel well.

Martin, if you don't have a fan, and want max. air flow try small coolers in front behind the horn grills. Thats the best for cool air. Eddie

Near the gearbox or in the wheelwell sounds like the plan because of the size of my cooler. If you put it in the wheelwell does it need to be protected from rocks, dirt etc coming off the rear tire?

Ron, and others, putting a cooler up front "sounds like a great idea..........but then you have to run hose both ways the full length of the chassis ( on the bottom) and aren't you still subject to tocks, debris cutting those 8-12 foot of hose??

I mounted mine on the left hand side, flat in front of the torsion bar and between the pan. I have a small .5mm thick x 3/4" aluminum "turn up" to direct more airflow thru the cooler. Mine is only a 1915 so a bigger capacity might require a fan?

My Cooler is L/R behind wheel W/Fan and Thermostat - 200 Degree Set Point. My Lubrication system offers 10 Pounds of Oil Pressure for every 1,000 RPM at normal operating temperature.

The longer the run and the more 90's or Bends, the greater the pressure drop.

Pressure drop must be considered and possibley conpensated with your Pump (Oil Pump).

If you have Low Oil Pressure now, adding device's to the engine luberication system will lower the oil pressure further.
