I want to replace the T1 oil cooler with a type 4 (the one used on 411/412 and 4 cyl 914's). Is it a good idea? What does it take to do that?
Also,looking for a 356 fan pulley.Any idea where to get one? Belt size?

Will these changes help the engine cool better? I do not have overheating issues so far,but it gets really hot here during summer and do not want to risk anything.

Sharpbuilt in Australla offers kit that makes that upgrade a lot easyer. Thats a good thing to do. on any vw engine.

I plain to do that on my next build along with a seperate oil cooling system for long trips that only works while the car is at speed under loads when the oil temp heats up more. No fan Air induction. I want to keep it very simple and hard to break.

As some have noticed with bigger engines after about 20 mins of traveling up the interstate at 60 or higher, the oil temp starts to creep up. I hope this will balance that out.
everyone and everything i've read says to stay with the stock cooler AND if you need to add a cooler, full-flow the case and put the cooler on using that method. The stock oil cooler actually is hard to beat, you've got a 1915 right? That's not a huge engine, you should get away with the stock cooler. Do you have gauges? What are your current oil temps? and what sender are you using? Also do you have all the stock engine tin, espically the tin underneth?

What Martin says is totally true. You can certainly install a Type IV cooler for better performance but it's probably not necessary. If you install it you'll need to modify your fan housing a little; go to Gene Berg's website as he has all you need to do it; including instructions. With respect to the pulley; the Porsche one will give you 11% more fan speed as compared to a VW (provided you keep the stock size crankshaft pulley). You can get it from Klasse356.com as well as from Mid America Motorworks and it will fit perfectly on your Bosch generator/alternator. Keep in mind that you also need to get the shims to fit that pulley; those are pretty important. With respect to pulley size do a search here and you'll find it; I remember posting the exact size. I added a 914 oil cooler to my type 1 motor. It also has a remote filter and oil cooler. I can't say how much better the 914 cooler is over stock as I've always had the external cooler in the system. The 914 cooler is 2 rows fatter than the stock dog house cooler and I had it left over from another project, so it went on the Speedster.
Obviously you have to enlarge the doghouse cooler tins, but it does fit.
The motor is a type 1 2107 cc w'dual 40mm Dellortos, and mild compression. I've never had the oil temp go over 210 degrees.

Thanks, Ricardo. I thought I remembered your guy doing something with remote coolers, and for once I didn't want to stick my foot in my mouth.
Lambros' question appears to be answered already, though -- I knew you'd be looking at it, among others.

I've got a DTM on my Type 1, which means I've got a Type 4 oil cooler as well, since they are set up in this manner. I've also got the biggest (96 plate?) oil cooler EMPI makes, with a Mocal sandwich bypass thermostat and an electric thermostat for the fan.

I've got a 2110 with a moderately mild cam, short rods, and 9:1 compression. When the temp gets above 95, with a lot of humidity (as it does here in the midwest)- the thermostat is feeding the cooler, the fan is running, and my Chinese VDO "Comb" gauge is in the middel of the range.

I wouldn't want any less.
Aircooled sells a Setrab oil cooler. I put one on my car but left the stock dog house cooler. Very good product. Plus is pretty compact. about 6" x 6" x 6" that included the fan. Put a thermostat switch and forget about it. Another thing to watch in conjuction with the oil temps are the head temps. Head temps i've noticed get hotter with load like hills, and low rpm. Oil temps get hotter with rpms.

On the fan shroud, I cut the back of the oil cooler housing (dog house)off, then rewelded it back on after added a width of sheetmetal to accomodate the wider cooler.
For the piece that caps the cooler housing and exhausts the air flow from the cooler, I had another one so I cut the open end of it off and welded it onto the original.
