I purchased a Vintage Speedster late last fall. The engine only has about 4000 miles since overhaul. When it was overhauled a 356 like Fram Canister oil filter was installed. (don't have the model number because the decal is coming off but it is one of those orange ones with the black top)

I did some research and had a new filter element standing by to install at the oil change. Image my surprise when I pulled the old filter out to find it in new, unused condition? No oil is getting to the filter at all. There is only a very small puddle of clean oil setting in the bottom of the canister. I disconnected the line from the crankcase and it appears to be dry also.

Do these filters need to be primed or filled partially with oil? This is the first one I have had with this mod. I'm just an old filter screen guy.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Mike

Thanks WB. You might be right. If it is...whoever did it, REALLY wanted it to look right. It has an imput line coming from the crankcase and a return. The return line goes to an elaborate fitting that is where the mechanical fuel pump would have been. Mine is electric.

Also kinda interesting that the put a filter element in it? I might try to find the previous owner.
Sounds like its being used as a crankcase breather if one hose vents fume from where the mechanical fuel pump was. Mabe the other hose goes to valve cover(s) or into the fan shroud. Clever idea to make it of value and just not for looks. That would explain too why there is some oil in there (vapors from breather). Post a picture of where the other line goes. I'll look at Dusty's photo. I was going to use mine for spare 9mm clips (and pray for no engine fires).
