I have a leaking problem where the oil filter seal meets with the engine. I have a type 1 1776 with dual solex. There is alot of oil that leak when I accelerate when cold. It happen twice and both times the engine was cold not sure if this make a difference. The car runs fine when the oil does not leak out. I am not sure what I should be checking. This started to happen after I picked up from a mechanic that said my engine was bad and to be replaced ( I don't think he knows what he was talking about) I had it there to have the carbs jetted. Can anyone help.

Remove both of your oil relief valves and springs and check to see that the pistons are the right type and spring lengths are correct. If someone got the springs in your engine reversed or they are too long the main oil pressure relief valve may not be opening, or it may be stuck closed.

The Bentley VW shop manual has the relief piston and spring info.
