Finally got my new 2 litre CHICO motor in the car. Looks amazing..but unfortunately he's used 1" rubber lines for the remote oil filter (FF of course). I have the oil filter mounted on my bumper support brackets (well out of the way of heat) but the way CHICO designed everything the 2 lines pass between the new A-1 header. Too close for comfort. The simple/easy? fix would be to insulate the lines...

Short of installing fancy schamcy' braided lines how would you guys go about insulating the 2 lines? Googled it and found some interesting aluminized sleeves on SUMMIT RACING's website...AND header wrap as well. Ideally I don't want to wrap my pretty new headers but dont' really know if sleeves alone would protect the oil lines.

My vision is some clean looking space age 'tubular' heat sleeves that slip over the 1" rubber lines and no messy/unattractive header wrap

 Ideas?

There some jibberish on them..and now that I look a bit closer they appear to be closer to 3/4" with most likely a 5/8" ID. Hard to read as I had to temporarily take the car off the jacks, slap some wheels on it and roll it out of the shop for an Insurance Co. photo shoot. It's goin' back up on jacks tommorow and i'll get a confirmation on the actual size.

It sure looked sweet though... with the new paint all buffed up and the polished wheels, new chrome and stuff....a helluva' lot better than when it rolled off the truck 3 months ago. I thought it looked amazing then. Now it's ridiculous.

We also fired the motor for the first time..without the muffler (waiting on that from A-1). LOUD and idled nicely. There was what we had thought was a spare red hot wire that we slid on the coil...and that made it fire right up. Everyone thought it was an electric choke wire..doh

... very exciting considering I've been staring at the engine for month..and the torn down chasis for 3...collecting tons of parts..ALL moving parts were replaced...EVERYTHING including all new nuts and bolts from FASTENALL + a few original quality german items. All hardwar is right at or above spec'..and metric of course

One of the last few details is solving the oil line deal.

Just a tip:  small lot quantities from Fastenal are generally priced on the higher side of reasonable (they're barely competitive with Home Depot around here).

"Contractor lots" (i.e.; boxed lots of fasteners) can save you 30% - 60% if you have an eventual need and a place to store them.  My local place also has occasional clearances where I've saved as much as 90% and they were happy to see the stuff go.  If you buy enough stuff on a semi-regular basis they'll even deliver (at least for me - their store is only a few miles away).

I hear ya'. I love the Depot'

..However my freindly FASTENALL pro has been breaking up lots (ie opening bags) for me. Just pulling exactly what I need. The only full bags I bought were lock washers and one with 100 cool chrome VW size sheet metal screws. Chico sent me there to get those the first time. The place is amazing. I always come out with my full list checked off.

These cars don't have that much hardware (compared to say a modern car) so if I totaled up the $$ I spent there it wouldn't scare me that bad. FASTENALL is 12 minutes from my house..whereas HOMIE Depot is an hour...and in the big bad city or RENO. Plus there's free

donuts every day, a freindly dog at the door and the girl stocking the shelves might be Scarlet Johanssens illigitimate sister

I found another product..FIRESLEEVE. Anyone ever try that. I looks fairly spaceage...and choice of colors. my sheet metal is mettalic grey and they have a shade to match that..or black

who said anything about braided teflon?

For now I'll flow with these hi tech super space age aviation conglomeration of whatevers'. I don't see them failing.

Come Sept. Maybe I'll upgrade. Maybe not. They seem to be working fine and they don't look half bad. I felt them after a good hour freeway blast and both were fairly cool to the touch.

A: "dragvw2180" said anything about braided teflon lines. The "braided teflon" referred to are braided stainless sheathed with a teflon core. They have a higher temperature tolerance than rubber core lines.

B: If the lines you've got were "cool to the touch" after a significant drive, you have a bigger problem than you know. Normal operating oil temperature for an air-cooled engine is between 180 and 220 (or so) deg. That is not cool to the touch. If your oil is cool, then the pressure is likely high enough that relying on a hose clamp is risky.

We've got no skin in this game. If you're happy, we're all happy. But.... high-pressure/temperature rated lines are a good idea.

And......just to throw my oar in the water (it's too hot today to be rowing anyway), I emailed one of the lead technicians with the TRG Racing folks, and found that they use Firesleeve on a regular basis.  It is amazingly good stuff and insulates various things from very high temperatures without degradation over multiple endurance races.

Moosey, it looks like you picked a pretty damn good product.

gn

they are. same hoses that came with the motor..built by Annibal Chico a short time ago. Very stout. I'm not worried in the least.

And when I say cool to touch I think I meant to say these sleeves are AMAZING. The hoses are def' up to proper engine temp but miraculously the sleeves are not really that hot. Yes you can touch them. Hot but not as hot as one would expect. Sorta' like the stripper at my cousins bachelor party. The boys promised me she was going to be HOT HOT HOT but ended up only being somewhat hot with a bad boob job and an attitude.
