fired my type 1 stroker , 1883, dual 40 idf's a month ago. At the time the Idiot lights reflected no apparent issues......but I just finished wiring additional gauges .

Using CB's VDO # 2350 multiple sender ( 1 wire for idiot lite, and 1 wire for gauge hook-up.) using brand new VDO ( cb again) #2373, 80 # max gauge........here's the problem, fired the engine, idled for a few seconds ( maybe 60-90), and the new oil gauge needle pegged off the gauge...maxed out to the peg. should I have let the engine idle and warm a bit and see where it dropped to? or .....was It smarter to shut her down ?

bad gauge ? bad sender? bad hookup? how can I come directly off the engine to read a direct oil pressure without senders and paraphanalia ?

Appreciate your wisdom..

You don't say what oil you're running or what the ambient temperature was. It's quite possible that the oil pressure would have reached "normal" levels once it had warmed up to operating temperature. This is why both VW and Porsche both stated in various owners' manuals not to run the engine at high speeds until normal operating temperatures had been reached.
It sounds like one of your pressure relief valves is sticking. This is a very common problem on older engine cases. If your case is dual relief, take both plungers out and polish them with some emery cloth or scotch brite. If it is only single relief, take that plunger out and do the same thing. Reinstall them and make sure they move inside the relief holes or hole freely. Also, there is a tool to help remove a stuck plunger. Call CB Perf. if you need one.
I had some oil pressure issues a while back so I did some tests with a mechanical gauge with a capilary tube hook up. It showed me a pretty
accurate read. My problem was I have a 0-100 psi. gauge, but the multi sender was like yours which was for a 0-80psi. gauge. I thought I had to
much pressure. The mechanical gauge matched my 0-100 gauge with it's correct sender and showed my pressure was within spec. The mechanial gauge was made by Sun which I got at Pep Boyz.

Bruce: I bought the matching sender with my 0-100 psi. gauge but
didn't install it right away. The number on the dual sender matched up for a 0-80 gauge. The test with the Sun mech. gauge confirmed the new sender was correct. The only problem is that it has no provision for
the idiot light. I have to find a dual sender for the light and 0-100
gauge. Not sure they make one though.
