I have a new 1904cc engine with a oil spraying problem. Oil is comming out of the front pulley. I have already put a sand seal in it and vented the valve covers and the alt. stand to a breather box. There is only 300 miles on it. Most people are saying to let the rings seat, about 1000-1500 miles. Does this sound right or is there another problem?

Is the pulley a cheap-o degree pulley out of India, or the stocker?

If it's aftermarker, replace it with a good low milage stocker (NOT a new repro stocker) and see if things get any better.

In addition, check for clogged vents. Remove the oil fill cap and see if the spray lessens. Check for air pumping out of the open oil fill as well, this would indicate blow-by and a bigger problem.

Sand seals are not required in street driven cars; your engine shouldn't be spraying oil. Evidently there's something wrong with the breather system installation; verify it and make sure it's installed as recommended by the manufacturer. Your engine is too new to experience blow-by and with your cylinders (are they 90.5 mm?) I seriously doubt it.

In my car (1915 cc) I had some oil seeping from the base of the alternator stand. I bought the Gene Berg breather box along with a VW OEM alternator stand (most of the available ones are Chinese and of questionable quality) and since I installed it I never had a problem. I find it difficult to believe that any engine builder worth his/her salt would forget to install the oil slinger at the crankshaft nose but maybe that's another possibility.
Larry,

Good Morning!

When your engine is "Running" pull off the Oil Filler Cap if you are seeing "Smoke / Blow-By" coming from the oil filler/Alt Stand your "Rings haven't Seated." With the Cap still removed; increase the engine RPM and monitor the Blow-By. The smoke should increase if the rings haven't seated becasuse you are increasing the "Crank Case Pressure" by increasing the engine RPM. This ususlly is the form of "Smoke/Spray" normally referred to as Blow-By.

As for the Oil leak at the Crank Pully; if the Pully isn't seating properly and or the Sand Seal isn't "Sealing" properly the added crank case pressure along with the leaking seal could cause oil to Weep or Leak in this location.

The "Blow-By" caused by the New Rings will slowly go away if they seat properly however the Crank Seal Oil should only get worse if it isn't sealed properly or if the Crank Pulley is improperly positioned.
