On my drive into work this morning I noticed a very unnerving smell ... burning oil.

Upon lifting the engine lid I see oil is everywhere and smoking off several locations. So, does anyone have a good way to clean oil off the entire engine compartment (engine, hoses, walls, deck lid etc.)? I figure I need to clean everything before I try to find where all this oil is coming from.

My initial thought is spray engine degreaser and hose the whole thing down.

Might not be the best environmentally sound solution but dont know what other options I have.

Anyone have a better idea?

Thanks,

Because it just started I am thinking an old hose needs replacing but I need to clean things up before I have any chance of finding a source. When I say it’s everywhere it's not an exaggeration, I don’t think I could do a better job of coating things in oil if I tried deep frying the whole back end.

Big fun will be getting myself and it home when I get out of work.

Almost sounds as if the oil has been over-filled.  If so, it blows out and all over the place, especially on the top side of the heat shields and around the generator/distributor.

Still, check your oil hoses for leaks.

Oh, and Simple Green works like magic on that sort of thing, along with the pressure washer.  Wrap your distributor cap with a baggie or zip lock bag before blasting it, though, or you'll have other problems.

Simple Green worked great it’s the cleanest the engine has looked since I bought the car. I did have some issues with water getting in some places I thought I had sealed off ziplock bags and twist ties didn't work as well as I thought they would.

I had a hose that was leaking, I cut off ½ inch and re-attached (it had the room). I think I will look to replace all the hoses over the winter. Only way I found the leak was to get the engine/oil hot because it would only leak when the oil was thinned out with the heat.
