My CB sump should get here any day. Before I install it I probably need to clean it out as it is cast I believe. Don't want any sand or casting material in it, though i imagine it was cleaned at the factory. What is the best way to clean it?

Hot water, if you have access to a power washer... even better.
Yeah, I have a powerwasher. Just didn't know if there was some trick to it. Thanks, Glenn. By the way, the underside of your beetle is really impressive.
It's amazing how much better the car takes off and handles when you tighten things up.
I have sump to install too - there is an extension to the oil pick up tube - does it get attached with just hose clamps and a bit of rubber hose or should it be welded on.

It's best to have it brazed but the engine really needs to be apart. When it's already built, a hose clamp is the most common.
Bob- As Glen indicated, don't count on it being clean if it's brand new (especially it it's Empi).
Greg- for an engine that's already together I would use some non-hardening case sealant with the clamp.

CB Performance Thinline 1 1/2 qt. with a JayCee cover / magnetized plug. I don't buy EMPI and at this point, I haven't found any more of their parts on the car. I just believe that I can get better parts from other manufacturers and I am willing to come up with the difference in cost. No slight intended at those who like EMPI.

I don't think there's anyone who prefers EMPI, just those that don't know any better. The EMPI of today has nothing in common of the EMPI of the 60s... other than the initials.
Amen. My first VW was a 1955 oval window that I bought in 1968 when I was living in Buena Park, Ca. Lots of EMPI parts slapped on it and they were fine.......then.
Clean it our with laundry soap and a wire brush, then WD40 with wire brush (great dispercent), then wash with laundry soap again. Power wash it, then dry it, use WD40 again, laundry soap and let it run under really hot water.
When you thin you have it clean, clean it again. I have never seen an after market sump that did not have sand or polishing compound inside.
Bob- The Empi of the late '50's and 60's set benchmarks in quality with their products; the company of the same name today has a whole different business model, which is to relieve you for as much of your cash as possible while spending as little as possible on the actual product.
Yes! We like to call it EMPTI as in: Empty your wallet and empty your garbage can to make room for the Empi parts you'll be throwing away from poor quality.. but in a pinch the will do...
but remember " a penny saved is a dollar spent" no one likes to replace parts twice....
I was a victim of a mechanic whom used Empi ..... never again!!

When I made the trip over to Intermeccancia to pick up my IM I flew over instead of taking the ferry. Somehow, the small airline forgot to load my bag onto the plane and I ended up arriving at Intermeccancia without a hat (and other things) for the top down trip home.
Luckily, Henry came to the rescue and came up with a ball cap for the drive home. The only problem was the cap's emblem.

I always thought EMPI stands for EMPI Means Parts Inferior ! Oh WOW...Johnnie's Speed and Chrome ! What a perfect place when I didn't have any money ! Still don't ....but my parts improved......Bruce
