I have a 1600 DP engine, single BOCAR 43 PICT/3 carb in my 67 bug. The history of the engine is unknown. After freeway driving at 60-65 MPH on a 80 degree day the oil temp is 220 degrees measured by a dipstick thermometer. Is this a reasonable temp, or should I look for overheating issues? The engine never "smells hot",runs smooth, no pinging, roughness etc. I have good engine seal, full tins, etc. 009 set at 30 degrees at 3000 RPM. It just seems to be running hotter than my 1600 in my Speedie. What is the oil temp range on an engine that is running well? Thanks

Hi Will,
I would not worry too much about 220, but what do I know.

This weekend I drove for about 1-1/2 hours at 3500 rpm plus or minus and it was 90+ degrees outside. Oil temp was 220 and a little up from there maybe 225+ (oil temp dipstick)From what I have read here 220 is ok and its when you go above 230 towards 240 we need to be cautious.

Have you checked out the doghouse fan? (engine off of course) This is a new dub and engine to you and there might be junk sucked in. Debbie has smaller hands and she can probably reach in better than you (big guy)

The power pulley (356 pulley?)is interesting. I have been thinking about one for cooling also. Already sealed up the engine pretty good with the bus foam and the aluminum foil hi temp duct tape.
On the mountain I flogged it hard on the way up and kept the revs up and it did not make a difference in temp, it was the same temp when I came down Sunday practically coasting.

Cheers
Dave
You're doing fine; that's toward the higher end of normal but it's still normal. Your car could probably run a little cooler with an SVDA distributor (as came stock) instead of a centrifugal advance unit. Your Intermec car is probably set up with an external oil cooler as opposed to the stocker; that's why it runs cooler but the Bug is fine; not to worry.
