Paul, I took a closer look at the photos on the Precision Matters website. It looks like the 356 model is a little longer than the one for the Type 4 - maybe because the two cases carry the oil at different depths from the top of the case?

At any rate, I'm sure you've noticed that for many Porsche owners, claiming to have a longer dipstick is very important.

If your beehive rear light car was delivered in '56 through March '57 You got the oil temp ( with specific temperature markings) and "gasoline text gauge...

March through June '57 they delivered a mix of oil temp specific and gasolin/tank gauges... Eventually migrating by summer '57 to the better known generic oil temp ( with no temperature markings) and "tank " gauges on all cars euro and us delivery.

my fathers Spanish delivered  February '57 356 came with the gague markings referenced on the left.

hope this helps... My original gauges are  February '57 stamped... So the temp specific oil-temp and gasolin (one off year) markings are correct for the gauge.   I actually seeked out these specific gauges... I liked the "gasolin" marking... And wanted the temp markings on the gauge.

hope this helps!

cheers

FYI, Both northHollywood Speedo and Palo Alto Speedo have pictures of the various combi gauges on their site for reference and have a wealth of information regarding what gauges were typically installed on what cars and for what region by VIN.  Harmut/palo alto really helped me out restoring a few 356's and making choices on my latest VS.

At one point the precision matters guys also carried a Type 1 temp dip stick... Give them a ring, they may be able to help you out.  I have one and to my surprise when I got it it had the Mainely logo on it. ( probably new old stock).

surprisingly both my dip stick and combi gage are always in the ball park of each other ( considering the combi gauge markings are bauge at best)
