It depends on your location and preference; either synthetic or conventional dino oil. For high temperatures (what they call tropical) all year round the VW Service Manual recommends 40W. I was using that and decided to try Shell Rotella Heavy Duty 15W-40 the last time I changed the oil but I've noticed the car leaks more oil now with the Rotella than with the Valvoline 40W I used to use. Also as per the chart in the Service Manual the 15W-40 is for more temperate climates. I'm considering changing back to what I was using.
Gerd, also remember that while synthetic oil is arguably a superior luricant, regular changes with old fashioned oil comes pretty close. Those tiny little synthetic oil molecules give you really good protection from friction, but them tiny little oil molecules will also find their way out your engine in places where they ain't supposed to get out of your engine.
