Found this a good read ..your mileage may vary.

Running an old engine without zinc in the oil is bad news-- especially when breaking in a fresh build. Ask around and you'll hear about high rates of camshafts going flat. Avoid the problem by choosing the right oil-- that has a zinc content of at least .11%.

My choice is Bradd Penn which is absent from this list ~

Here is the zinc content of todays oils:

I use Amsoil zrod 10w30 and it is stated to have a high amount of zinc and phosphorus. I also use Valvoline Racing which has it too. Looking around I can't find the percentage on either one though. I started using the zrod oil based on the amount of feedback for oil use in flat tappet engines.

I know some of you just use good ol' regular motor oil and manage 100 thousand miles on your engine. I commend you for your courage!

Just found this on Amsoil. Not sure how to translate it into a percentage...

1300 parts per million is .13%                                                                                                      1300                                                                                                                                                1000000 =.13%

The whole automotive industry claims than the latest SN classification is "backward compatible" and some guys (eg- our own El Guapo) do get away with putting in whatever name brand is on sale, and doesn't seem to have any adverse effects. That only works with stock (and maybe some softer single high performance) valve springs, though- other than the occasional 1/2 or even full quart for top up in a pinch (even oil slightly low in ZDDP is better than not enough oil), I certainly wouldn't use an SN oil regularly in an engine with dual springs or if it revved much more than about 5,000 rpm with power.
