I have spent a good deal of time considering the acquisition of a speedster, and I am narrowing down some of the options, but I would appreciate some advice from you experienced owners.

Basically, here is my situation. I live in Peoria, Illinois, not a hotbed for Speedster ownership. I am interested in a used but high quality car that has been well cared for, and is both mechanically sound and reliable. I am not looking for a car for the track, but I don't want a slug either so I am interested in 100 hp or so with probably a 3:88 trans for highway driving. There are good air cooled mechanics here (Kauth & Mayeur and Brad Mayeur the 914 and air cooled guru and engine builder)

I am not a mechanic and don't want to start now at age 60 to hone those skills.

From a manufacturer standpoint, and I know they all have their strong and weak points, what will be best in a summer driver, VS, Beck or what?

I don't want to spend more than $20k - $22k.

Advice? Red flags I need to look for? Knockout issues that mean "run, run away now!" Good resources or available advisors?

Add-ons, best type of tonneaus and top to be looking for. Things you wouldn't live without and things you've found sound good but aren't worth the money/time/trouble/hassle?

Thanks in advance for any input. I drove aircooled 25 years when I lived in SoCal ( VW van, bugs, 912E) and never got it out of my system.

Bob

Bob, I am just east of the Fox River in St. Charles, IL. If you want to check out my 2007 VS I would be willing to meet you half way. Maybe we can meet in LaSalle Peru. It will give me a chance to stretch her legs on some country roads. My car has many key improvements over a standard VS and it is totally dialed in. These cars all take some sorting to get them where you want them. I am running a 2275cc with A-1 Performance Headers, Magnaflow muffler, and high quality CSP german shifter. Its totally different than the base setup the car came with. There is a ton to learn and you came to the right place. Vince is harmless unless you mess with one of his hot daughters. Give me a call 630-205-9616
