I don't know your laws in CA. In Texas, you can use year of manufacture plates depending on how your car is registered. I bought a pair of 1967 Texas plates off eBay and had them restored, then used on my '67 Chevelle. Since, I found this great site for reproduction plates that are exactly as original. The DMV will check and make sure no one is using the same plate, then good to go in Texas for a small fee. At worst case, you can get a pair for photo shoots and exhibitions... Good luck! http://www.licenseplates.tv/terms.php
Go to the CA DMV Website and pick out an Environmental Lic. Plate.
let's say: 57 SPDY
Then go to http://www.licenseplates.tv/terms.php and order the plate 57 SPDY in black with yellow lettering.
It needs to be shipped to another state, then forwarded to you in Calif.
When the CA environmental plate cames in, register it to the Speedster. Then, put the black plate on the car with the stickers.
The plate matches the registration. keep the silver plate that says 57 SPDY in the car just in case.

First thing, ordereing a vanity plate then switching to an old plate with the same number/letter sequence is illegal.

Second, in CA you cannot legally register an old plate to a new car unless the old car is "legimitately" an old car, and if you lie about the registration then that is a felony.

Common practice among replica owners was to register the car as a 195- Porsche. If it's not a 195- Porsche then that is illegal.

Yes, I know it's done all the time but eventually you'll get caught and when you do, your car will be impounded and you'll probably be proscecuted. If you don't believe me then ask Dale Bates as I believe he suffered much aggrivation when he was caught.

FWIW and cognizant of Larry's extensive background in law enforcement, I wholeheartedly encourage California SOC'ers to forgo displaying 'cool retro-looking' plates, for the plates properly assigned to your Speedy.

ALL CHP officers know that there were no personalized plates prior to 1969, so a CA personalized plate in yellow/black or black/gold is a dead give-away to the illegal status of your vehicle. It's enough risk to not display a front plate (as most SoCal SOC'ers do), no need to compound your woes with fraudulent plates.

It's just a matter of time before some cop having a bad day decides that you look like you're having WAY TOO MUCH fun driving your Speedy!!

Peace - Out!
Thanks Jim,

I want everyone to know that I've been retired for almost 5 years and frankly, I don't give a damn what you do unless it directly affects me.
I'm not trying to "police" your activities but the reason I posted this information was solely to keep your "ass" out of the fire.

It's your choice, I just posted the possble consequences !!!!

Yep! DMV sent me a nasty letter that scared the crap out of me. I am basically a follower of the law, but I registered my 2002 IM as a 58 Speedster using a title from New York. I asked about legallity and was told "its a grey area..". To the state of CA there was nothing GREY about it.

Fortunately, I was in process of the SB100 process (I had my number and was just waiting for my CHP and Light and Brake inspection). I live close to the Sacramento DMV headquarters and spent a couple of hours clearing the "mis-understanding" up. I had to pay fines for registration late fees and back sales taxes. Speaking to the manager of the Registration Fraud unit is where I learned (and I know that no one wants to hear this) that registration of these cars as VW's (doesn't matter the year) is also considered fraud. Just sayin'...

The letter told me that should I be caught driving the car on the street it could be impounded and I could be found guilty of felony fraud. GULP.

Do what you want. You may not get caught. Then again....
