Read John Muir's book "How to keep your Volkswagen alive". It has complete list of tools to have on board.
In addition, make sure to carry a clutch cable suitable for the shortened wheelbase. And, of course, my replica tool kit: https://www.speedsterowners.com/forum/readmsg.asp?t=15347
Most important! Auto club card and a cell phone. Don't leave home without them!;)
Gordon--your original list was great for me to use to stock items to carry on a trip. I do load most of it.

I had a little carb problem on the Tail Of The Dragon two years sgo and my son Russ fixed it---some piece of junk in one of the Kadrons.
My son fixed it and laughed when he asked me if I had an awl and I said "plastic or wooden handle?"

The key to your recommended list is a sheet showing the location of each iten; "pliers = black tool bag, Multimeter = small plastic box, etc."

I will go from carrying all the listed items to maybe just 10% of the list after I have reliable Type 4 power.
I have to agree with Terry on this and my recent experiences. A AAA Card and a cell phone are the best wrenches you can carry.

Other than that, here is my list:
Fan belt
Throttle Cable
Clutch cable
quart of oil
jack
Extra nuts and bolts of various sizes. VW's only use a few different sizes.
Metric tool kit with a good assortment of 8,10,11,13,17,19mm sockets and wrenches. One 36mm socket
Screw drivers
Vise Grips and don't forget the duct tape and your Kerswell pump!
Jack:

Glad the list worked out. I carry most of that stuff, but not all, and it's all stowed away out of sight. Those different handled awls is a riot, though.

Consider keeping what makes sense, though, not only for your own needs, but for the needs of others as well. I have very seldom fixed anything on the road on my own car (a couple of burned out bulbs and a rattle here and there) but I've used a lot of the stuff to help other people in trouble - and not just with Speedsters/Spyders, either.

When Chris and I do Carlisle (and any other place I trailer to and have LOTS of room in the back of the truck) we tend to bring a LOT of tools and spares, mostly to help anyone else in need. That stuff has paid off many times, making minor inconveniences out of what could have been major PITA's. Just ask Al Shapiro and Henry Reisner.

Bob: If I were going to carry a minimal list, Your's would be it. Just the unique stuff that you can't get at NAPA and the tools to swap them out. Just remember, though.......

If you don't have it with you, it can't come in handy......
"anitfreeze"??????? WTF is That?

I've also heard it on good authority that Hoss carries one of those fancy-shmancy emergency starting gizmos that you charge up at home and then zap your dead car with the "paddles" to bring it back to life (or something like that).

Probably WAY better than a pair of jumper cables and I bet it takes up the same amount of space.

I wonder if you could cook a hot dog with it if you placed the dog between the battery clips?

hmmmmmmmmmmm............

Hoss, reading "codes": . - .--. .... --- -. . .... --- -- .
Locally I bring a couple screwdrivers, wrenches etc. for carb/linkage. Also, the synchrometer stays in the car. I have a jack, lug wrench, and spare(THANKS John Weyand!). I also keep an extra belt and tools to change it along with a quart of oil. Also some disposable rubber gloves and some rags. an extra fuse of each type, and allen keys for valve covers and Jamar shift linkage, just in case.

Long trips to Carlisle I bring my whole toolbox, jack, jackstands, just in case, like Gordon.
