Some nice video of what it was like to drive one of the 'giants' Porsche competed with in early 1950's sports car races - a 1952 Ferrari 212 Barchetta. A 2544 cc, 160 hp V-12 with three Webers.
Sometimes I think my car is a little rough around the edges because it's a plastic replica, and that the real cars of that era were more refined machines. Watching this makes me wonder, though.

He mentions it's something of a beast at slow speeds.
With no assist, 12 cylinders over the front wheels, and probably a pretty quick steering ratio, I can see it being a handful. If only they'd put the motor in the back, where it belongs.

Ya think there are a few moving parts in that engine. Like a 2.0 911 motor x 2.
And I have seen pics of disassembled V12s of different makes, around this sort of displacement, and the pistons look like little juice cans. Cute they are. Done right, they rev like the dickens. And so S-M-O-O-O-O-T-H.
And a five-speed gearbox - in 1952.
