One step forward two back.......

Finally got the speedster bolted to the pan and we start looking at the dash and windshield. The winshield is installed an inch farther forward on the left than on the right. Gotta fix that now. The gages were installed incorrectly. I guess I'll have my buddy glass all the holes and start over!!!

I posted a CMC supplied template to my profile for the windshield stantions - its might get you closer.

Thanks, going by that my windshield is WAAAAYYY off!! Now looking at other stuff, I'm going to have to glass up almost all the holes and start from scratch! Were the windshied holes marked from the factory. Also I heard the tail light cut outs were lined but he cut one about 1" higher than the other.

The CMC build book says there are dimples marked in body but it must have been the first ones that were flashed. Mine (1989) had none which was why I asked for the template. If your tonneau and top have already been mounted - I would't move it too much or you'll end up buying new ones.

That template has made the rounds on here, and has saved quite a few people a lot of work and anguish. Neither of my CMC bodies had dimples for windshield corner post location, although the rear lights were clearly outlined. Rocky Cimbrec sent me the windshield post templates (I can't remember if they had the coffee stains, but I think they did!) and that made all the difference. Why they were not included in the CMC build manual we'll all never know.

You're beginning to sound like Alan Merklin (and a number of others on here) when he has had to un-do some of the work done by an original builder in order to make the kit "right".

You get into something, see what they did, then you have to sit back and say to yourself; "What the heck were they thinking?

Better than the coffee stained templates....
I just loaned Rocky my dummy set of used windshield posts.
I cut the 7/16" female threaded tubes off and installed a screw in the base of each post.
All that needs to be done is correctly align the windshield frame base, cut the upper frame and rubber to fit.
Slide the dummy posts along the sides of the windshield frame until the screw bottoms out on the top of the cowl, that's now the exact location to bore the post hole. ~Alan

Wow! I didn't think of that. The old posts are pitted and I'm going to have to buy new ones. I will use the old ones as a template. Yes the tonnue has been mounted so I will have to leave the windshield a little farther forward. I'll try to get some pics up soon.

Be sure that you have enough clearance under the cowl to affix the windshield post spacer and bolt, there is little room to be off center under there. ~Alan

Yeah, and moving the windshield forward will totally screw up your wiper arm movement.

It's a hell of a lot easier to move your tonneau cover snaps than to screw around adjusting everything later on to accommodate a windshield that's too far forward.

With the windshield not set in the correct location, the back side of the wiper arms will bind against the lower windshield frame. ~Alan

I think I'm going to have my buddy fill ALL!!!! the holes and start from scratch. Good to know someone in the fiberglass business! I'm still not in the hole though! LOL Money wise that is. Might as well do it right.
