So, there is no sign on the steering column switch that says "DO NOT REMOVE THESE SCREWS"...
the whole frigging thing jumps apart! Six or seven little bits. WTF??

Kind of reminds me of the springs on disc brake calipers that hold the pads in place. More than once I've had them spring off into the 'never-to-be-found' reaches of my garage when changing brake pads.
It look a long time to find all the bits, once Mike told me what to look for. I initially had 4 out of 7. A magnet helped.
Oh Collin, that just cracked me up! I took mine apart this past spring, and cleaned and re-greased it. But, I took the switch off the column. Like did it on the bench. Yeah, it's still a mother-F-er to put back together!
Bonus points for using the word "oopsie"!
Don't you hate it when those little brass thingies fly out and can't be found??
Wait, that was a different thread.
Glad you got it back together. The question now though is, were you able to fix the original problem?
you should have called Lane, he could have helped you here, except it would have taken 20 pages of posts to do it.
plbplbplb!!!!! (sound of raspberry)
Regarding the original problem - my low beams stopped working.
After checking, cleaning and replacing the fuses and headlight switch, the Carey and Mike at Beck thought that the problem could be the little rocker inside the steering column switch.
I should have checked by testing the output from the switch, but noon, I had to try to see it! Hence my oopsie!
The little rocker is faulty, so the solution is to replace the steering column switch - that is a bear of a job, because I would have to unravel all the connections that are tied up in the dash behind the steering column.
My electrical-savvy buddy has jerry-rigged a solution, where my low beams no longer operate based on the indicator stalk. Basically hot-wired the via the headlight switch, through the fuse panel. So thats what I'm going with.
El Frazo, I haven't seen a 20 post page yet but some are getting close
Drop a little brass thingie out of your carburetor - We'll get you there......
Just make sure you're not watching where it lands (still haven't seen the damn thing).
I just had a headlight trim ring retainer spring fly off into never-never land 3 days ago and I still can't find it.
Just make sure you never end up with extra parts...
A while ago I was working on my headlights and I dropped a small screw. It bounced off my shoe and rolled away.
Do you think I could find that little SOB?
Not a chance.
I even asked my 'eagle-eyed' wife to help me, but that little screw had made a clean getaway.
Try using one of those very large square magnets from harbor freight that you can drag around. Cheap and easy.
I had something like that in my shop last year and it picked up so much crud--half nails, sheared-off bolt heads, rusty nuts with sheared-off rusty bolts captured in them, all nestled in a ZZ-Top beard of steel shavings--that I just said
I had something like that in my shop last year and it picked up the broadcasts from "Radio Cameroon"
Pretty good music over there, actually. Paul Simon likes it,too.
