I've had two jobs where there were at least 500 design engineers packed into one windowless room drawing lines on paper (pre-computor days). It's not bad if you like your work.

Another job had a ground floor window looking out at steeply rising weedy hillside. One day a six foot rattlesnake came cruising down that hill past my window to the base of the building. I kept looking under my desk to be sure that thing wasn't in the building! Security guard later caught it and skinned it.
Unfortunately security requirements mean that the building can't have windows. When they built it a couple of years ago, they thought some skylights would be nice. After it was finished, they realized that regs preclude even that, so they painted over 'em. If someone without proper clearances is in the building (escorted, of course), we have to have annoying orange strobe lights flashing overhead so that we remember not to leave anything on our desks that they might see. Sadly, Paul, I can't get you to put in any windows (waaaahhhh!!!!!).
Lane,

Just finished up this UFC Compliant, Medium Level Blast Rated, Full SCIF building designed for progressive collapse south of Baltimore. Just received substantial completion on a 600,000 SF facility last week that was designed for a high level of protection. The glazing to achieve the blast level is expensive, the film to achieve the SCIF is expensive. Getting a building designed and built to a high level of proteciton isnt cheap, but it can be done. Sad thing is we have all this glass, great daylighting, but as soon as the end user moves in they install blinds and draw them shut for the term of there lease.

The point of this design was to make a building that did not look secure. No one should suspect what is going on inside.
