I have a CMC speedster 83 factory build that has a gas guage issue. The gas guage goes to empty when the ignition is off and goes past full with a full tank whn ignition is on. The problem is the guage when empty goes down to the full mark only. Looks like a new fuel sending unit/float  was installed. Has CMC guages. I ran out of gas yesterday and as luck would have it, a fire truck came by and the firemen got out and pushed me over to a gas station. Action above the call of duty for the firemen, but embarrasding for me. Any ideas on the guage issue?

The CMC Vintage gauges take a specific (and suspect NLA) gauge sending unit.  You can't just substitiute a VW one for it and get a reading or an accurate reading.  The resistance has to match the original one.  Does it say VDO (hence a VW replacement) on top?  Have you pulled it to look at it? If it is the Vintage gauge one it could perhaps not be adjusted correctly or the arm stuck in up position.  Post picture.  You might get lucky and find someone with old Vintage gauge bits.

If I've read this post correctly, When the sender arm is up the guage reads way above full, and when the arm is down, the guage reads at the full mark....

If so, you might be able to insert a lump resistance in series with the guage....

I would measure the resistance of the sender and double it as a first shot.... ( adjustable wire wound resistors are good for this....   20 watt nominal power handling capacity.... )

If it aggravates the situation, then parralell the sender output with the resistor...

I located the sending unit and it is a VDO vw replacement. Since the CMC guage as reported earlier may not read correctly. However, about an hour ago I noticed the fuel guage not turning on at all. I did nothing to change this. Any thoughts? Also any recommendations on what guage to buy to match the white round guages on the speedster and be compatible with the vw sending unit? Finally any idea on the ohm range on a vw sending unit?

Thank you

Does it have a good ground wire - to a clean ground (big problem on plastic cars)?

According to CIP1 site-

Resistance:
Empty = 80 Ohms
Full = 8 Ohms

VDO makes a white Cockpit series gauge that fits a 2 1/16" hole and works with that sending unit - I bet your Vintage gauges are 2 1/8 though. $28.
