Ok I know that this has been dicussed before but I have never seen off the self parts for a outlaw style replica 356. I have spent the last month going through my vintage and believe that everything is now properly sorted and am ready to convert the car into what I really want which is a replica of the car shown below.

I have seen pictures of it before but this is all that I can find at the moment. It is a obosolete parts race car I believe, or one built for a customer.

I will be keeping the current color of my car but would like to delete the windshield and retrofit a racing style bubble, build a tanuu cover out of fiberglass or steel if avaliable, one that covers the passenger seat and the back seat, top will be removed from the car as well as passenger seat, interior will be redone in aluminum or stripped down and coated. I will convert to 5 lug and buy reproductions of the 550's, or standards run without caps.

At this point I can do the 5 lug conversion easily, the interior I have done in the past, and I believe that DMAN550 sells a replica bubble windsheild, as well as the rensport mirror housing that I would have to use.

But the tannu cover and the head rest that folls it to the back of the car will be a problem, has anybody seen these for sale off the shelf that could be retrofitted to the vintage body, and if so what was the cast. I need to get a roll bar into the car and at this point I am hoping that someone else has done this. I have seen them for the 550 replica's but never for the 356.

So cliffs notes of what needs to be done.

Buy/Build Tanuu cover for the car, with headrest integrated.

Build/Buy a roll cage with crossbar with support beam that runs to the passenger footwell.

Get windshield and mirror's.

Lower drivers seat.

Buy/Machine 5 lug conversion.

Better exhaust, I can fab this up.

Perfect that is the car, I wish that I could get ahold of the owner for some closeup pictures of how it is fastend to the car. Will contact JPS and see if they have the parts that I need.

Also forgot the louvers on the rear deck.

Any other suggestions guys on what else can be done to the car.
See the triangular aluminium pieces with a hole in the middle. They are replicas of the 550 Spyder bonnet latches. I am going to use these (made myself) and fit small brackets onto the rear/side section of the tub. I'd probably use Dzus fasteners hidden under the triangular latch plate.
Remove the inner door panels and relace with light weight alloy panels. For a door release use a simple ring pull arrangement. Alloy kick panels, remove the carpet and fold up alloy panels to replace it. These are the things I'm doing to my Speedster, all are reversible without modifications.

Peter are you the owner of the black outlaw 356 in your file book, if so more pictures if possible.

If not then, I do not want to go with the full GT exhaust will more then likely hack apart the one that I have and add the single exit, maybe make a rear pipe out of a stinger style exhaust but with a larger diameter opening. I had a 1 5/8 in the garage somewhere but it was more then likely gone into the black hole that my garage resembles.

I actually have all the parts tracked down at this point except the full tanuu cover bit which I can frame out if I really needed to.

So far I am looking at around

300 for the rear cover.

5 lug conversion, easy just going to redrill and buy the standard rims leave them open ~400.

Sell the windsheild and posts, which gets me about even on the cost of the bubble windsheild

~200 for supplies to make a replica of the racing side view mirror.

350 or so for the paint and body work, done by a friend.

Rear cutout's on deck, free + paint

200 bucks in beer and fabric/foam to make the rear headrest.

Then whatever the materials or the like cost for the full tanuu.

Seriously would love to just have a shop do it for me though, don;t know of anybody in san diego area that I would really trust to do the job correctly, with the merger comming up my time will be in rather high demand.
Michael,

You are a man after my own heart. The vintage racer/outlaw look makes my heart beat faster and I've also been after implementing similar ideas on my car. The black car you posted is a beauty. I spent the past few days hunting for the through-hood GT fuel cap setup that is on the same car (see photo below). Parts Obslete said they made the cap and surround ring but they are too busy to make another set right now and my guess is the price is out-of-sight anyway. I can add the drilled plate if I can find the cap. Anyone know of a "reasonable" source for these caps with or without the vertical, drilled plate? Anyone know the diameter of the GT cap?

Bruce, I've got a beautiful VS classic speedster that I'm in love with, but every time I see your car I smile from ear to ear. I'd love to build an Outlaw/Racer like yours some day. Are you planning to bring your tub to Knott's next year? I'd really like to see it up close. As for the gas cap, GT Werk at GTwerk@aol.com or 562 431 1523 has what you need I think. Like GT louvered alum.deck skins, roll bars, gas cap with fin, nickel plated, gas filler neck and tray, GT make overs, all for real 356's. Maybe you can use some of it too. Eddie
Michael-
I've got a complete wide-5 front brake assembly. Includes brand new hoses, near new wheel cylinders, springs, shoes, drums & backing plates. Only thing you'll need are wheel bearings. If you're interested, $60/shipped in the US or pick them up in San Diego and their yours for $40. They fit 65-later VW ball joint spindles. Let me know if you need pics
Bruce you might want to give vintage spyders a call, I know that I have seen the pass through gas cap on all of there cars.

Right now I am looking at scrapping the front windshield do to the fact that I have a it's finished and b, I use my car as a daily driver and it's in the high 40's right now with 100% humidity and I like not having a non frost bitten nose.

Scavaging parts from my garage tommorow if I have the time, this will be a rather unique project for me. Also sent a email to my friend at mordern image so we can make the gumballs up in vinal so I do not have to have them painted on the side.

if anybody has better pictures of the black outlaw I would really like to see them.
Michael:

The owner of the blue Outlaw is named Ted. I emailed him a while ago, and I am sure he would love to correspond to you about his car. It really is a beautiful restoration. I got his email from the Outlaws website that has pictures of his car. He also has a lovely 356 coupe, I believe.

Seems the Parts Obsolete links are not working for a while. When they are working again, click on the pic of Ted's car, and it leads to more pictures, and contact information.

I tried to find an old message from him, but no luck.

Bob
Eddie,
Thanks for the comments. Going outlaw has been fun and there are a number of things I want to do. The car really needs some body detailing and paint but I'm holding off until several modifications are finished. I'm located in Maryland so will be heading to the Carlisle Meet in May - Knotts is a bit too far but I'm sure both Meets will prove to be highlights of the year.

Thanks for the lead on GTwerks, it looks like they are in the process of creating a website so I sent them an e-mail asking for information.

Peter,
You're doing some nice work on your car. Are you planning to post details on how you manufactured your exhaust? I am currently using a merged exhaust with a large stinger but am looking for something to replace the stinger.

Michael,
Keep us updated on your progress. If you're interested, Operations Plus produces meatballs for alot of the Cobra's and I purchased mine from them. I agree with Robert, Parts Obsolete has great photos of several outlaws (www.partsobsolete.com/index.html), that's a good source of the photos you are looking for (when they have it working again).
Try dario for the hinges, sory for the lack of contact, My powerbook is back a Mac getting a new battery and case and all I have is the office Web.

Will try to contac obsolete parts and get better pictures of the car, on another side note, I rain tested my 356 last night as my S2000 is in a 100 piece's due to the stereo install in the garage and could not be moved. Everything held up except for the notch on the front rail that fit's inbetween the windsheild post, a old sweeter on the dash kept everything nice and dry.
Peter,

I might have been incorrect about your cap, at least regarding the Beetle. It appears the 100MM Volkswagen caps (Beetle and Bus?) say "VW" on them. Is there a chance you actually have a 356 gas cap since there is no "VW" on it? I have not been able to find photos of a 356 cap to confirm this but believe I might have found a couple of companies selling them - will post more info here as soon as I am sure.
Peter and other outlaws,

I found the fuel cap to match the through-the-hood GT application seen in the photo below. The cap is for early Speedsters through the T5 and is part number 201-270-00. A photo of the new cap is attached below and measures 4.5 inches across. I hunted around the 'net and found the best price at NLA Limited in Sparks, Nevada for $29.95 (good service and fast delivery), the other places ran as much as $55 and more.

Since I do not have a filler neck with the larger GT opening my plan is to use the VW tank, move the filler neck to the center of the tank, attach the GT cap to the latching mechanism of the VW cap, manufacture and weld the upright/drilled handle to the top of the cap, powdercoat the cap assembly and cut the hole in the hood. Unless someone has some better ideas?

How is yours going Peter?
