I'm currently in the market for a 356 Speedster, I live in SoCal, and this local dealer gets them ever few months.  This is the one currently on the lot.

From poking around here, my guess is $29,500 for a 356 by VS ( with 26K miles and a 1600cc engine ) seems a bit nuts.  I looked at and drove the car, and it's a beautiful car.

From what I am reading, this would be more like a 12-15K sort of car.

Any thoughts here?

That is nuts. Looks like a nice well maintained car, but you would be paying, I believe, well over market.

First, do you want new or used? How much do you want to spend? Is this the car (color, drive train, trim) you want? If you want new, and a VS, I'd call Kirk at Vintage and have him price out this same car.

If you want used, cars like this pop up pretty frequently and I'd get in touch with a couple of the many SoCal guys on this site who are likely to be able to help you or guide you in your search.

Look at the car cited in the post above. Theron's car. That is a nice car, with a stronger drive train and whatever the black one has that Theron's doesn't (radio) can be added for little money. Something to consider. Well sorted, ready to go, in SoCal and owned by a well known and stable member of the SOC community.

Good luck!

Thanks Bob!

I think used. and I think VS because it seems to get good marks for reliability.  I also don't want to wait for a new one to be built.  I don't want to spend any more that 20K for it.

I really want to get my feet wet and get a little experience with these cars.  I'm going to bet I will own more than one over my lifetime, so for the first go out of the gate, I want something pretty reliable, I'm flexible on color and options ( to a point ).

The tudynelson car is priced where you could drive it from 1-3 years and not lose a penny if you resell, as long as you take care of it.  By then you would know exactly what your wants and needs would be if you decided to order a new one.  The HB car has broker/consignment fees involved, but does have the 1915 motor which is a nice plus, but not worth an additional $2.8K.  If the tudynelson car is as represented, it is an excellent value.

Tom, thanks you hit the nail on the head for me with this first statement.   Which is why I am considering making an offer on the black one at ~13K ish, or just wait...  I can't get up to see the tudynelson car for about two weeks, and it will be long gone by then, I suspect.  But also there will be others that come along as well.

The 1915cc is enough for me too lean that way, and it also has bumper overriders, all P-badging, Fog lights, CoCo Matts a Luggage rack and a stereo set up as well, so to me[ my $0.02] knowing that most dealers will move at least down $1000.oo in price, and I'd get the extras would be worth the trip to HB and it has a lot lower miles, but I'd still want to look at the Silver one too while I was down there.

Welcome!

Cheers, THOM

You'll need to wait til December to find one in up state NY for that kind of price - add a divorce, distress, death or disease too.  You're in SOCAL at peak of season.  It will sell for $23k or so. That's list price thru a dealer.

The season comment makes sense.  But new from VS, these are going for 23K.  So I was trying to figure out for this specific VS that they are offering, the fair market price for a car with 26K miles.    even at $23K it would seem high to me.  I felt that 12-15K was about the right price for this specific car.

I am sure they will sell it for that, but it doesn't seem that is the right price for what it is.

Tom-

Your car is so sweet, and looks so good-- perhaps you should keep it. Make it your summer daily driver to look at the jobsites and meet with the subs. It took me a long time, but a few years back I decided I was going to treat my car like transportation (rather than a work of art), and it changed everything for me (for the better).
